Escaping To The Bass Wilderness
Some exotic Mexican or Texas location with scorching hot temps, bass over the ten-pound mark and margaritas on the deck after each day of fishing?
Sounds pretty good doesn’t it, but let me share another option that we shared firsthand this past season in Northwest Ontario at Nestor Falls Fly-In Outpost Camps, a five-star location that has spectacular fishing and the beauty of Canada’s wilderness surrounding you.
Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts is a licenced air carrier with an immaculate fleet of floatplanes that include two turbine De Havilland Otters, a Beaver, Cessna 206 and a Cessna 185 that take parties of guests into some of the most secluded, remote fishing you will ever experience in your entire life for walleye in the five to seven-pound class, northern pike upwards of forty-two inches, smallmouth bass in the four to the six-pound range, muskie and lake trout.
The fishing is only one of the reasons this outfitter has so many return customers, it is the upgraded, spacious and comfortable cabins on each lake that feel like home.
Each of the bright living areas has comfy sofas, easy chairs, a shower with hot and cold running water, solar electric lighting, a refrigerator, a freezer as well as a propane stove and oven.
Check out this link and see which of the twelve outposts is right for you. These spots are away from the world with nothing but the woods, the water and the sky. And lots of fish. In most cases, you’ll be in the only outpost on the lake.
Our trip was shared with a good friend, Mike Gate of Nestor Falls who is a certified pilot and good friend of outpost owners Dave and Michelle Beaushene, so flying into our lodge of choice was made even easier with Mike as a pilot and guide whichever outpost or lake we chose.
And for those that know me, a true ‘basshead’, it was one of the outposts that featured wilderness smallmouth bass fishing on a lake that had not seen another angler or lure in almost two years!
Pause and think about that for a moment.
A remote wilderness outpost lake, not another angler in almost two years and jam-packed with smallmouth bass up to six plus pounds just waiting for us!
This right here is what I call ‘paradise bass fishing’!
Upon arriving at the outpost camp, Mike prepared our rig which was a sixteen-foot boat powered by a brand-new Yamaha four-stroke outboard with comfortable swivel seats, cushions and more than enough gas to explore the entire lake if we chose. Mike directed us to some gorgeous-looking rocky points on this crystal-clear lake that screamed smallmouth bass live here and not four casts into our trip with the YoZuri noisy topwater prop bait, yours truly was into the first of over one-hundred-plus smallmouth bass was caught on this day. These fish are insane here!
Similar to a wild mustang that has never been broken, these beautifully barred smallmouth bass just do not know the meaning of quit. With the aid of long-nosed pliers, we shook the fish off at the boat side and kept fishing as many rocky points, mid-lake reefs and shoals and tiny bays that featured everything you could ever imagine a ‘bass paradise’ would have. The smallmouth were virtually everywhere we fished. Some were one pound, some were three pounds, but the one thing they had in common was the ‘wild mustang’ attitude that was simply incredible to experience first-hand.
Mike fished a variety of spinnerbaits and topwater walking baits and I continued with a combination of topwater prop bait, popper and the ever-popular wake bait that slithers on the surface making a ‘V’ motion and fished slowly back to the boat with a wide wobbling, side to side motion that drives smallmouth bass crazy anywhere you fish them. These bass just couldn’t get enough of it.
Is it time to treat yourself and your fishing buddies to the trip of a lifetime in Northwest Ontario at Nestor Falls Fly-In Outpost camps? It sure made an impression on us and one that we will remember for years to come!
Many of this camp’s visitors become lifelong friends and return year after year. Whether you’re after walleye, northern pike, muskie, lake trout, or smallmouth bass, they will take you where the action is and share in the joy of your success. After all, they love to fish too – that’s where you can find them when they’re not helping others.
