With endless sections of snow-covered forest, trail systems, escapements and natural areas, Ontario is a hotbed for Nordic skiing. Shifting geography and beautiful icy backdrops provide a blank canvas to fill with cross-country skiing adventures this winter.

The range of cross-country ski events within the province ensures that there are options for beginner trail enthusiasts, those looking for steep competition, and skiers just looking to be social. From open race days to gear swaps, meet-ups and official races, this list details all of the 2024/2025 cross-country skiing events in Ontario.

December 2024 Events

Dec 1

Kivi Park Strength to Speed Striding Camp, Sudbury, ON

This day skills camp is open to all ages, with a focus on categories from U12 - U18. Open to skiers and coaches, this day aims to utilize whichever weather conditions are present at Kivi Park to help train skiers in: classic striding techniques and reaching and maintaining top speeds in distance skiing. This course will take place mainly in the gym, looking at the corelation between certain exercises to speed skiing.

Dec 5

Lappe Fresh Air Series #1, Thunder Bay, ON

Hosted by Lappe Nordic at Lappe Ski Centre, this is the first of two cross-country ski races taking place in this 2024/25 series. This interval skate race at the Lappe Ski Centre takes place on their 30 km of groomed classic and skate trails.

Dec 26

Boxing Day Classic, Thunder Bay, ON

Hosted by the Lappe Nordic Ski Club at the Lappe Nordic Ski Centre, this classic, individual start, race event is open to all skill levels and ages. Taking place on the groomed trails at the Lappe Nordic Centre, races range from 100 m - 10 km. This is a great way to shake off winter’s early chill in good company.

Holiday Burnoff Chocolate Bar Race (NOD Race Series), North Bay, ON

Hosted by North Bay Nordic, this year's much anticipated Holiday Burnoff Chocolate Race allows you to choose your technique and your distance. Be rewarded with a chocolate bar no matter what. Fun for all ages. This year the event is part of the North Ontario District regional race series.

Dec 31

The New Year’s Eve Lantern Ski and Social, Hiawatha Highlands, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

This annual event, hosted by the Hiawatha Highlands Ski Club in Sault Ste. Marie, brings cross-country skiers together for an early-season social ski. Ski the 4 km Pinder trail through the dark of night as it is lit up entirely by lantern light. This event is open to all ages and skill levels.

Fees:  Season pass holders: Free. Kids: $5.75+tx, or $10.50+tx with rental. Adults: $10.50+tx, or $15.75+tx with rentals.

January 2025 Events

Hiawatha Invitational, Hiawatha Highlands, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

The theme of this race is inclusivity as it is geared towards secondary school students, but is open to racers of all ages and skill levels. Come compete through 50 km of beautiful groomed trails at Hiawatha Highlands. Races are open to all ages, while distances range from 1 km to 30 km and offer options for classic and skate skiing.

Night Lights Race Series, Sudbury, ON

This event combines the excitement of racing with the thrill of skiing under the stars, as racers of all ages and skill levels compete against each other in this race series hosted by Walden Cross Country. Compete in one of these skate or a classic races as the snow falls and the sun is long gone. Dates for 2025 are yet TBA, so stay tuned for updates.

2025 Nordic Canada Selection Trials and OCUP#2, Thunder Bay, ON

A part of the OCUP race series, this race week will take place at Lappe Ski Centre near Thunder Bay and will host a series of racers in the U14, U16, U18, U20/SR and Masters divisions. The week will include a series of training days, and races include: 1 km free sprints, 3.75 km - 20 km classics, and 7.5 km - 10 km freestyles.

Jan 4 - 5

Nordic & Biathlon Ski Festival, Kenora, ON

Come and celebrate the combined skills and challenges of nordic skiing and biathlon training, at the Kenora Nordic and Biathlon Club. On Friday night, this festival will kick off with some fun warm ups on the lit trails at KNBC and Mt. Evergreen. Next, participants can compete in challenges like no-poles/ leg only races, hill climbs and double poling events. On Saturday morning at the Lake of the Woods Gun Club and Biathlon range, racers will have the opportunity to register for the main event. Stay tuned for race details.

Club Exchange Week, Bruce Ski Club, Hepworth, ON

From January 4th to 12th, 2025, members of the Sauble Ski Club, The Owen Sound Ski Club, and the Glenelg Nordic Ski Club are able to use the facilities at the Bruce Ski Club in Hepworth for free.

Whoolly Hippo Loppet, Walden Cross-Country, Naughton, ON

This annual event, at the Naughton Trail Centre, promises a full day of cross-country skiing fun for every age and skill level. The event is a freestyle loppet with distances ranging from 350 m to 15 km. Come participate in a race, win a draw prize, enjoy free refreshments, snacks and a comfy heated wax hut.

The Sounder Ski TourGeorgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre, Parry Sound, ON

Whether you are a recreational skier, a veteran, or you are a participant in the SOD Paraffin Race Series – Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre invites everyone to participate in the 2025 Sounder Ski Tour.

From January 12th to 19th, members of the Sauble Ski Club, Glenelg Nordic Ski Club, and the Bruce Ski Club are able to use the facilities at the Owen Sound Ski Club for free.

Lappe Fresh Air Series #2, Thunder Bay, ON

Hosted by the Lappe Nordic Ski Club, the Lappe Fresh Air series takes place through multiple events in the 2024/25 winter season. This interval skate race at the Lappe Ski Centre takes place through their 30 km of groomed classic and skate trails.

Jan 18

Mono Nordic Ladies Day, Mono, ON

Whether you’re an experienced skier or have never been out on the trails in your life, the Nordic Ladies Ski Day, hosted by Mono Nordic is a great place for skiers of all skill levels and ages to ski, hike, socialize and spend the day outdoors together. There are complementary snacks, beverages, warm firepits to hang out at, as well as access to rentals and ski lessons.

Sauble Winterfest, Sauble Beach Cross-Country Ski Club, Sauble Falls, ON  

The Sauble Ski Club has a heated chalet with 18 km of cross-country ski trails and 14 kilometres of snowshoe trails. Winterfest offers skiers the chance to take part in a day of free skiing, snowshoeing, community, and hot food. Suntrail Outfitters will be on site with gear trials available.

World Snow Day, Walden Cross-Country, Naughton, ON

Enjoy a day of food, warm drinks, meals, and activities at the Walden Cross-Country Ski Club. Free hot chocolate and pancakes, access to trails, scavenger hunts and more.

Fees:  $85  for a family of 4 + $10 for each extra person.

Jan 19, 26 & Feb 23

Adult Biathlon Program Intro Clinic, Oro Medonte, ON

Offered by Hardwood Ski and Bike, this introductory clinic takes place throughout the course of a day and is offered three separate times throughout the 2025 winter season. Participants will learn to hone their skills as nordic skiers and marksmen in this unique course. This program focuses on the combination of competitive nordic skiing and target shooting, so you will spend some time skiing on the nearby trails, and some time learning the proper procedures for safe and accurate rifle use. Only air rifles are used.

Passholder Appreciation Day, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Hiawatha Highlands hosts their special event for 2025 passholders. This day of appreciation falls on the official date for the World Snow Day and will treat passholders and guests to a day of skiing on a variety of cross-country trail systems, enjoying hot beverages and treats and interacting with the wonderful members of the local ski community.

Jan 20

Moonlight Ski, Glenelg, Markdale, ON

Come experience what some call a “magical” evening of moonlit cross-country skiing, community gathering, and one big pot luck meal. The Glenelg Nordic Club invites skiers to explore the 25 km of groomed trackset trails at night, before gathering for a warm meal afterwards. Bring your potluck contribution, your skis and enjoy this tradition.

Fees:  Adult day: $10, adult season: $50, children under 18 ski free 
Registration: This event is free to members, but non-members can purchase day passes

Algoma University’s S’mores and More, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Hosted at Hiawatha Highlands, by Algoma University, this event is for Algoma University students and alumni to participate in a full day of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, camaraderie and s’mores.

Coach Trip: Horseshoe Resort, Orilia, ON

Glide through forests and fields on 30 km of trails groomed for classic and skate skiing. Classic and skate ski rentals available. All cross-country skiing is self-guided. Ski passes are $30 per person.

Jan 26

Muskoka Loppet, Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club, Huntsville, ON

This classic cross-country race takes place in the beautiful scenic forests of Arrowhead Provincial Park in Huntsville. The race is open to all skill levels and ages, and promotes the simple act of competitive cross-country skiing in a supportive environment. Note: lunch will not be provided this year, so bring your own food.

Registration: Closes January 22, 2025. Early bird fees in effect until January 15, 2025.

Jan 26

Midland Loppet, Mountainview Nordic Centre, Midland, ON

Open to all age categories and skill levels, the Midland Loppet invites cross-country skiers to participate in 1.5 km, 3 km, 5 km, 9 km, or 15 km skate classic distance races. Come spend the day enjoying what the Mountainview Ski Centre has to offer, then warm up with a hot beverage. MountainView Midland Loppet is now part of the SOD Paraffin Series of races.

Women of Winter, Huntsville, ON

Hosted by Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club in Arrowhead Provincial Park, this annual ski event is open to women of all ages and skill levels. The event involves a meet and greet with coffee and muffins for participants and instructors, a group lesson, a talk from a keynote speaker, a group lunch, and an afternoon filled with activities like fat biking, snowshoe yoga, guided snowshoe hiking, and ice skating on the Arrowhead Skate Trail.

Women’s Winter Wonderland, Oro Medonte, ON

Presented by Hardwood Ski and Bike, this unique day of adventure is geared towards women of all ages and abilities who love outdoor winter activities. Choose from a range of exciting options to tailor your own perfect day based on your tastes. Activities include: skate and classic skiing, yoga, snowshoeing and fat biking. The event also includes a delicious lunch, an après social hour, a chance to win prizes, rentals, drinks and access to local accommodations (if requested).

Adult Learn to Race/ Learn to Loppet Clinic, Hardwood Ski and Bikes, Oro Medonte, ON

This four week course is intended to help adult and experienced skiers in their journey towards growth. This course will help experienced skiers to become better at racing and at overall competition, and will cover: technique, waxing, route planning, mental skills and nutrition.

Fees:  $350 including trail pass or $250 for season pass holders.

February 2025 Events

Feb 1

Winterlude Triathlon, Ottawa, ON

Known in the community as the “most Canadian event around”, this triathlon in Ottawa is for those with an intense love of winter sports. The race combines a unique mixture of winter running, cross-country skiing and ice skating (on the Rideau), to make up one of the most unique winter competitions around. The race distances are: 8 km skate, 5 km run, 6 km ski. You can compete alone, or you can enter with a team. Enjoy added bonuses like: On-course nutrition from XACT, pro photography,  and post-race hot chocolate.

Opeongo Classic Loppet, Opeongo Hills Nordic Ski Club, Brudenell, ON

The Opeongo Hills Nordic Ski Club will host the 8th annual Opeongo Loppet on Feb 1st, 2025, on the hilly terrain of their groomed trails in Brundell, Ontario. Consisting of loops throughout the club’s trail system, the races offered range from 2.5 km children’s events to adult 20 km races. Stay tuned, as more information regarding the 2025 race will be announced soon.

Feb 1

Coach Trip: Bruce Trail, Duntroon, ON

Explore 25 km of cross-country trails groomed for classic and skate skiing, as you take in views of Georgian Bay. This guided cross-country day trip takes place in Highlands Nordic Ski Club, and gives you access to their cozy forest chalet. This ski trip is for intermediate skiers.

Feb 6

Muskoka Elementary School Race, Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club, Huntsville, ON

This race is for the young ones! Taking place at Arrowhead Provincial Park, this classic-style cross-country race is open to grades one through eight, with distances ranging from 1 km to 3 km. Rentals are available at the provincial park.

Feb 7

Bon Soo Lantern Ski, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Everyone is invited to come to the Hiawatha Highlands ski club to ski their lantern-lit Pinder Trail. Explore the beautiful groomed tracks while the dark woods are illuminated by lanterns and the moon. This event takes place in celebration of the 2025 Bon Soo Winter Carnival.

Feb 7 - 9

Canadian Ski Marathon, Outaouais, QC

Just on the other side of the provincial border, the Canadian Ski Marathon is one of North America’s largest and most fabled cross-country skiing events. Open to skiers of all skill levels, the race takes place over two days and offers racers the chance to participate in a range of races from 12 km to 160 km on classic groomed trails. Choose to ski The Tourer, The Taster, The Half Marathon, or The Coureur Des Bois, through the challenging Quebecois winter landscapes. For inclusive accommodations, look into their dorm packages.

Blue Sky Loppet and Chocolate Races, North Bay, ON

Hosted by North Bay Nordic, the Blue Sky Loppet and Chocolate Bar races invite participants to race their professionally groomed cross-country trails as they race in the Loppet or Chocolate Bar races. The loppet distances are 9 km or 18 km freestyle or classics, while the Chocolate races are 1 km - 3 km sprints. As the name of the event suggests, winners will receive chocolate bars (sizes based on finishing times and places) and all skiers will hopefully experience a blue sky day of racing.

Suntrail Special Cross-country Ski Race, Hepworth ON

Sponsored by Georgian Bay Nordic, Bruce Ski Club, and Suntrail Source for Adventure, the Suntrail Special is an annual freestyle cross-country race that takes place at the Sawmill Nordic Centre in Hepworth, Ontario. A part of the SOD Paraffin Series, this race is open to U6 - U10 for classic, and U12 - Men and and Women’s open, for freestyle. Races range from 500 m to 10 km.

Valentine’s Day Lantern Ski, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Hiawatha Highlands invites you to bring your long-time loved one, first date or your crush to their 2025 Valentine’s Day Lantern Ski. This cross-country ski, through their lantern-lit trail systems is the perfect way to spend a cold winter evening with someone special.

Feb 15

Mabel Lake Ski Tour, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

This recreational event involves groomed backcountry runs and the option for skiers to ski distances ranging from 6 to 25 km: the Half-Mabel 6 km, the Kin-to-Creek, 12 km, the Connor-Mabel 14 km, the Full-Mabel 19 km, and the Uber-Mabel 25 km.

Family Day, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Come celebrate Family Day with a cross-country ski outing at Hiawatha Highlands. Enjoy discounted family rates for day passes and rentals, as well as hot drinks, bonfires, treats and other fun outdoor winter activities.

Feb 17

Family Day at Sauble Ski Club, Sauble Beach, ON

Tucked between Sauble Falls and the Rankin River, the trails at the Sauble Ski Club are an excellent example of what small town Ontario has to offer during the winter. Family Day offers cross-country skiers the chance to ski for free on the 18 km of groomed trails the club has to offer.

Feb 22

Team Sprints, Parry Sound, ON

Hosted by Georgian Nordic, the 2025 team sprints will take place on February 22, 2025. This SOD Paraffin Race Series is an inclusive environment for cross-country skiers to participate in a two-person team relay event at Georgian Nordic Outdoor Activity Centre in Parry sound. Race categories are open to U8 - Open and Masters, and range from 250 m to 1 km.

Loppet Ski and Snowshoe, Timmins, ON

The Porcupine Ski Runners will host a full day of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing excitement at their 2025 Loppet Ski and Snowshoe event.

Feb 23

Community Classic Ski Race, Hepworth, ON

Held at the Sawmill Nordic Centre in Hepworth, Ontario, the Bruce Ski Club hosts this annual ski race for categories: U8, U12, U16, U18, and open. Races range from 1 km to 11 km, and take participants through 13 km of groomed classic and skate trails at the Sawmill Ski.

Feb 28 - Mar 2

Youth and Para Ski Youth Festival, Huntsville, ON

Hosted by the Arrowhead Nordic Ski Club, this three-day celebration of skilled cross-country youth skiers and coaches will take place from February 28 to March 2, 2025. Previously known as the Ontario Youth Championships, this event is all about positivity and recognition of skills in youth athletes.

Mar 1

Sleeping Giant Loppet, Thunder Bay, ON

Come take part in an exciting, long standing cross-country ski event at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park. The 45th annual Sleeping Giant Loppet is an event that welcomes skiers of all skill levels to compete. From 8 km Jackrabbit races to mega hauls like the 50 km races through the Burma Trail system, there is something for everyone. Choose from a range of skate/classic race events, or take part in their 35 km non-competitive open event to take in the scenery in peace. Mar 1

Hardwood Loppet, Oro Medonte, ON

Presented by Fischer/Swix at Hardwood Ski and Bike, the Hardwood Loppet takes place over 40 km of meticulously groomed ski trails in Oro Medonte. The race offers youth options for skiers who want to participate in a 500 m, 2.7 km, or 5 km races, as well as a non-competitive 15 km race for any level of skier. The main events are the 15 km and 30 km skate or classic loppets.

Beaver Freezer, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Hiawatha Highlands hosts the 2025 Beaver Freezer, a multidisciplinary winter race through the snowy park trail systems. Choose to cross-country ski, to fat bike, or to run, for 14 km, 24 km, or 42 km races.

Mar 9

Midland Ski Cross, Midland, ON

The Midland Ski Club hosts the 2025 Midland Ski Cross on March 9 at the Mountainview Nordic Centre. This race is a part of the SOD Paraffin Race Series, and is an interval start race on a closed loop. Though this year’s event details have not been fully announced, previous events have involved elements like rollers, jumps and banked turns on a closed-loop course.

Mar 2025

PSR Loppet, Timmins, ON

The Porcupine Ski Runners in Timmins, Ontario will host the 43rd annual PSR Loppet in March of 2025. This race involves classic and skate events, as well as a 3 km Snowshoe Poker Run. Register for a 1.25 km classic, a 3 km, 8 km, or 20 km classic/ skate race, or sign up for the 3 km Snowshoe Poker Run. At the end of the day, enjoy hot beverages, lunch and on-site snacks.

March Break Activities, Naughton, ON

Bring your whole family to the Walden Cross-Country ski club to enjoy a range of awesome winter activities at a discount, all week long. During March break, take part in ski lessons, ski the trails, sip hot chocolate, go snowshoeing and search for hidden treasures in the beauty of the Northern Ontario trail systems.

Fees:  Children’s 5 day pass: $25, children’s 5-day rental: 35, adult 5-day pass: $55, adult 5-day rental: $65. Or buy a family pass: $75 for a family of four, with $10/ additional member.

Cross Quetico Lakes Ski Tour, Quetico, ON

The Cross Quetico Lakes Ski Tour is an annual event held for cross-country skiing enthusiasts who have a heart for adventure. This adventure tour takes place over the course one day and carries skiers through a range of unpredictable backcountry conditions…there are no groomed runs on this trip. Participants will spend the day skiing over lake ice and through powder, before warming up and celebrating over a big dinner that evening. The full package includes shuttle service, breakfast, trip fees and access to a big dinner and adventure film screening.
