Experience the Fun of Treetop Trekking in Ontario

Zip. Swing. Climb. Play in the canopy above.

Each Thanksgiving, my family and I share an outdoor adventure—something that is active and helps us connect to each other. Last year was the best ever. We conquered the Treetop Trekking aerial course in Huntsville.

After getting geared up with harnesses and helmets, we anxiously walked to the course area. We looked up and saw people zipping through the colourful fall foliage, balancing precariously on log ends and swinging on ropes like Tarzan.

We were all a little nervous but very excited to get started. After a safety and practice session close to the ground, we climbed the first ladder and rocked the first several courses.

The next courses were a little higher and a little more difficult, but our confidence grew after completing each one.

We laughed, joked around and encouraged each other to keep going. It was a great bonding experience.

The final course, before the big zip lines, was the Tarzan rope swing. My niece, Nicole, shown below, had no fear, but as I sat on the edge of the platform, high in the trees, I really didn’t think I could do it. But I did—I let go and did a free fall (anchored by a secured rope) into the large net. I felt so alive and so proud.

My niece, Nicole, loved the Tarzan rope swing.

If you are looking for something fun to do with your family this Thanksgiving, or anytime, I highly recommend trying a treetop aerial park or a treetop canopy nature walk. Find one near you with this list of the treetop adventures Ontario has to offer.

Ascent Aerial Park – Sauble Beach

Ascent Aerial Park features a 40-foot ropes course with 30 obstacles on three levels to test your agility and mettle. The course accommodates almost everyone. Feeling nervous? Stay low. Feeling adventurous? Start heading up. They also have Canada's first zip coaster—a fixed track like a roller coaster with the rider suspended below the track attached to a trolley.

Adventure Park - Blue Mountain Resort

Visit the Adventure Park at Blue Mountain and participate in one of their many exciting and challenging experiences. Try out the Timber Challenge High Ropes Course with three levels to suit every comfort level. Climb ladders, cross bridges and zip line through the trees. The park also includes the Skywalk Challenge High Ropes Course which has even more obstacles, some over water, and all with a great view of Blue Mountain Village.

Canopy Tours - Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve

After a short guided voyageur canoe ride across a wilderness lake, you’ll journey up—through treetops on the world’s longest canopy walkway. Over half a kilometre long, offering some of the best treetop trekking in Ontario, the canopy boardwalk winds through the treetops some 10 to 20 metres above the forest floor. A platform suspended from the treetops above becomes the gathering place where your guide elaborates on the forest environment surrounding you.
