The Fry Bean Chip Truck

A chip truck dream comes true!

Melissa Hughes had dreamed of owning a chip truck for years. “When one became available right across the street from my Copper Bean Café in Bruce Mines, I couldn’t say no. Even though I was in the midst of opening The Roasted Bean Café in Thessalon, I knew that if I passed it up, I would regret it.”  And so, The Fry Bean Chip Truck was born.

In the spring/summer of 2025, Melissa and her team opened both ventures. “The truck needed a lot of work before I could serve food out of it, but with perseverance and hard work, we were ready to open in early summer.”

Melissa had a local carpenter build a brand-new deck and some picnic tables for those who want to stop and enjoy their meal overlooking the park and lake. A local artist did the painting for the truck and the roadside signs.

The menu at the Fry Bean is simple, yet so delicious. With fish and chips, poutine, and a variety of burgers, chicken fingers, hot dogs and sausages, as well as mozzarella sticks, deep-fried pickles, and onion rings. Some specials like Butter Chicken or the Greek burger with feta, tzatziki, tomato, lettuce, red onion and garlic aioli are offered throughout the season. Or how about the Thundercrunch chicken burger with a mildly spiced buffalo sauce aioli, pickles, lettuce, tomato, applewood smoked bacon and cheddar cheese? Along with lots of choices of drinks, there is something for everyone.

During our interview, Melissa told me an amusing story about one of her burgers. “When I first created the Facebook page for the Fry Bean Chip Truck, I posted a photo of a burger that was going to be on the new menu. Well, it seems Facebook decided it didn’t meet their standards, because it was “impersonating a celebrity,” so they blocked my account! I was completely floored and decided, rather than fight them, just rolled with it,” laughed Melissa. “I opened a new Facebook page and decided to name the new burger the “Celebrity Burger”; it’s been a hit since.”

“The Fry Bean Chip Truck has been a popular stop for tourists and locals alike so far in its first season, and it seems to fill a niche in the area. Staffing-wise, mostly students are running it during the summer months, and it works out perfectly with their schedule. Every year, we will be open from May to September for a full season.”

Well done, Melissa!  Your enthusiasm is contagious, and your food is YUMMY!
