A DIY Fly Fishing Base Near Longlac, Ontario

When it comes to a do-it-yourself, drive-in fly fishing adventure with real variety and real wilderness, one place in Northern Ontario rises above the rest: Flint Wilderness Resort, located just outside the town of Longlac. This region offers exactly what most fly anglers dream about: miles of untouched water, healthy fish populations, and the kind of backcountry that reminds you how small you are.

My goal for the week was simple: target large northern pike and brook trout in some of the most remote rivers and lakes I could reach. I wanted an honest adventure, long boat rides, hours of casting, and plenty of hiking down skinny trails along thunderous waterfalls and hidden streams. Flint Wilderness checked every box.

Fly Fishing Gear for Northern Ontario Pike and Brook Trout: Rods, Flies, and Backcountry Intel

I packed two rods for this trip, a 9-weight for pike and a 6-weight for brook trout. My fly boxes were loaded with big pike patterns, streamers, baitfish imitations, and flashy attractors, along with classic brook trout flies for the rivers. Nymphs, streamers and dries. The lodge provided a sturdy, reliable boat for exploring the pike lakes, and a set of detailed maps pointing us toward the remote rivers where wild brook trout are virtually untouched. Flint Wilderness has an immense docking system in case you also want to bring your own craft.

Fishing Remote Lakes and Rivers for Northern Pike and Brook Trout

The fishing didn’t disappoint. We caught plenty of northern pike both in the lakes and rivers. And in the backcountry rivers, we found what we came for, beautiful brook trout in cold, clean water. We hiked through real wilderness to reach them, following narrow game trails that ran alongside thunderous waterfalls. We were also fishing alongside fresh bear, wolf, and moose tracks. It felt like the kind of adventure fly fishing is meant to be. We left the wildlife alone, and they left us alone.

A Comfortable Fishing Lodge on Klotz Lake

Back at the lodge, the experience was every bit as positive. Flint Wilderness Resort is clean, comfortable, and built for anglers. The cabins are well-kept with great beds, solid kitchens and an amazing view of pristine lakes and sunsets. It’s everything you need and nothing you don’t, the perfect base camp for a week of exploring. Affordable, accessible, and genuinely remote once you get on the water.

Why Flint Wilderness Resort Is Ideal for DIY Fly Fishing Trips

What stood out most about the entire trip was the flexibility. At Flint Wilderness, you can fish your own way. Fly or spin. Chase trophy pike all day, hike into river systems for brook trout, switch gears to walleye or smallmouth bass,  it’s your adventure from start to finish. And with the amount of water available, you’re never far from your next opportunity.

If you’re looking for a fly-fishing trip that blends comfort, wild scenery, and serious, affordable DIY potential, Northern Ontario’s Longlac region and Flint Wilderness Resort should be at the top of your list. For me, it was one of the most rewarding weeks I’ve had with a fly rod in hand, and I’ll absolutely be back.
