Tag Team Walleye For More Bites

A boat-access retreat in beautiful Northern Ontario.

What makes fishing so much fun? Is it the pursuit and capture of bigger-than-average fish?

Is the alone time in a boat or in a wilderness setting away from the crowds that makes it so appealing regardless of the catch?

Personally, I enjoy a combination of all of the above but sharing these moments with friends or family is priceless to me.

I had the opportunity to ‘tag team’ for walleye once again with an old friend from Timmins, Ontario, Connor Dunn with whom we fished and filmed a show years ago and shared similar fishing habits and tactics not to mention the non-stop laughter and comradery of good people.

On this trip, we ventured to a formerly named the Horwood Outpost and now under new ownership and management called the White Moose Wilderness Outpost. This Outpost offers you the chance to truly get away from it all in beautiful Northern Ontario with world-class hunting, fishing and recreational getaways in a remote wilderness area on the shores of Horwood Lake near Foleyet, Ontario, Canada.

The Outpost is a boat access-only retreat consisting of eight fully equipped housekeeping cottages, showers, a kid's play area, a gift/snack shop and a full-service marina offering boat rentals, bait and fuel. It's the perfect base for your northern getaway!

Horwood Lake has over one hundred miles of shoreline. The lake is renowned for exceptional walleye and northern pike fishing and the perch fisherman will also be rewarded.

The Outpost also offers great opportunities for fall black bear and moose hunting. This area of Northern Ontario is well known for offering the best moose and black bear hunting in the world.

Connor and I fished several locations off island points between eighteen and twenty feet of water with jigs and worms and found fish just about everywhere there was some wind current blowing over the deeper points. Horwood Lake’s walleye is gorgeous with dark yellow and gold mixed with black bars and bellies.

We caught a lot of different year classes of fish from 12 inches to 18-plus inches and Connor caught a few beautiful gold bars in the 22-inch class that stayed for a quick photo before being released.

The White Moose Wilderness Outpost is located 1-1/2 hours west of Timmins, Ontario on Horwood Lake near the town of Foleyet. The Outpost camp is on the lake’s mid-point, a twelve-mile boat ride.

The camp is boat access only (no roads to camp). Transportation is provided from the parking area to the camp. Guests are welcome to bring their own boat but boat & motor rentals are available at the camp.

The camp has eight modern housekeeping cottages which can sleep from two to eight people. The cottages are fully equipped with fridge, stove, BBQ, pots, pans utensils and coffee pots. Guests provide their own food.

The cottages are wood stove-heated and plenty of wood is available at camp. Pillows are provided but sleeping bags (or bedding) and personal towels are required. Cottages have electricity, indoor toilets and running water and have their own deck, picnic tables, deck chairs and propane barbeque. The camp setup is ideal for breathtaking sunsets and campfires in the evenings.

The white moose wilderness outpost passed our test with flying colours on all levels of accommodation, location, service and walleye fishing.

A great location for a buddy trip in a remote setting that will have you coming back year after year.

About Karl Kalonka

It's possible Karl's love for fishing began as early as the age of five. His parents took the kids on weekend trips across Ontario fishing for panfish, catfish, and bass. "I started with a bobber and worm from the time I was five years old," says Karl. These days, he has the enviable task of doing what he loves for a living, travelling across Ontario fishing, filming and producing two outdoor series, Extreme Angler and Crappie Angler TV.
