Jack's Lake Lodge
Looking for that perfect family Ontario summer vacation spot, but still want some quality fishing? Look no further than Jack’s Lake Lodge in Apsley, Ontario. This little gem hides in the shadows of the many larger and more popular Kawartha Lakes yet offers many of the same great fishing and family opportunities. Plus, it’s only a couple of hours from Toronto.
Jack’s Lake is only 3,800 acres, which makes it extremely manageable for almost any boater. Its clear waters hold both numbers and trophy-size musky, as well as some giant walleye. It is loaded with a fish-holding structure. There are lots of points and flats with deep weeds, several islands, and rock humps that all hold muskies.
The lake is divided into several basins, which allows you to fish different sections of the lake and to always have a place to fish no matter the weather conditions. There are several boat launches and marinas on the lake as well.
Jack’s Lake Lodge is a family-operated business that has been around since 1973 and offers incredible remodelled cottages with a beautiful sand beach. It’s the perfect place for a family getaway that also offers some incredible musky fishing. There are lots of summer activities in Apsley, and you’re only 20 minutes from the Silent Lake Provincial Park and Petroglyphs Provincial Park.
While filming an episode of The Musky Hunter Television Show, we found the muskies relating to deep weed edges on mid-lake humps, and along weedy shorelines that dropped off into the main lake basin. These were classic Kawartha musky spots, so anyone who has fished any of the Kawartha lakes will feel right at home on Jack’s Lake. You’ll want to fish different types of weed areas to determine if the muskies are in bays, points, humps, or shorelines, and also consider wind direction.
We caught muskies on smaller bucktail spinners but had action on Bulldawgs, Tubes, and minnowbaits. We experienced beautiful summer conditions with little wind but still managed to boat muskies in the clear water. I can only imagine what fishing would be like during overcast conditions.
One of the great things about Jack's Lake was that there wasn’t a lot of fishing pressure. There were people enjoying the water, but it often felt like we could fish any spot we wished, whenever we wanted. That’s what Ontario musky fishing is all about and Jack’s Lake has it all.
