The Northern Walleye Dream
What kind of fishing dreams do you have?
Do they include numbers of fish, size of fish or maybe a combination of both in a wilderness surrounding that only dreams can create?
We experienced the dream fishing vacation this summer from Sunset Country while visiting with the gracious hosts of Moosehorn Lodge near Sioux Lookout. If you are interested in one of the finest fishing experiences in Canada; whether it's nonstop action, or the chance to catch that trophy fish of a lifetime...this place has got it all!
Multi-Species Fishing at Moosehorn Lodge
Located on the English River Watershed, and gateway to the famous Lac Seul, you have your choice of fishing six connected Precambrian Shield Lakes with over 750,000 acres of water directly accessible from their dock. This is a vacation that offers you the best in multi-species fishing. These lakes are teeming with walleye, muskie, smallmouth bass, northern pike, lake trout and whitefish and are well-regulated to ensure quality fishing for generations to come.
Our trip included some post-spawn smallmouth bass action with tube jigs, jerk baits and black hair jigs fished along the first sharp breaks along rocky shorelines and points as well as the ‘Lac Seul’ walleye experience that has to be witnessed firsthand to truly understand just how incredible it really is.
Get Your Big Muskie
They are a fully modern resort providing top-notch accommodations, meals, equipment, and the area's finest experienced guides, that will put you on fish like no others. Moosehorn Lodge has proven itself to be this area's top outfitter for big muskie, and the only one that offers you guided evening fishing.
Chunky Bass and Scrappy Walleye
Our first morning started off chasing smallmouth on windy rock points and my first bass of the year was a beast that inhaled my soft swimbait and jig combination. Working along the same shoreline edge we connected with even more chunky bass and a bunch of scrappy walleyes in the two to three-pound range just for variety's sake.
As the sun and the water temps rose, the bass became more aggressive and moved to the shallower back bays where we virtually had the entire place to ourselves and caught more bass than we could count, releasing all to live another day.
We planned to fish for those highly sought-after trophy walleyes on day two but first, it was time to feast in the main lodge with homemade soups and a fresh, crisp salad bar to start the evening, followed by a buffet-style dinner of delicious dishes, great cuts of meat and all the fixings. You may not have room, but they insist you end your meal with one of their homemade desserts – it wouldn’t seem right without it.
Lodge Fishing Boats Stay in the Water
One other thing...because they enjoy on-the-water access to six connected lakes (Minnitaki, Abram, Botsford Pelican, Lost Lake and Lac Seul as well as access to other lakes with boat launch access) you can put your gear in your boat when you arrive and remove it when you depart at the end of your stay...you don't have to keep moving your equipment in and out for each fishing day. The boats are cleaned and gassed up every day after you are done fishing.
They have eighteen-foot Kingfisher boats, they are wide, with full flat floors, pedestal chairs, bait wells, fish wells and plenty of storage bins. They come equipped with seventy HP four-stroke motors with tilt and trim and depth finders.
The Harbercraft (Kingfisher) twenty-one-foot bowriders are available with a guide only. These are equipped with 150 Yamaha four-stroke motors and eight horsepower, four-stroke kickers. They also have bow-mounted trolling motors. We want you to have a fun, comfortable, trouble-free day on the lake.
The Trophy Walleye Experience
I can honestly say I have never seen so many trophy walleyes between twenty-two to twenty-nine inches caught back to back to back from the exact same location in my entire life. We caught some thick-bodied, healthy walleye it felt like I truly was dreaming and this was not reality. Cast after cast to a sandy edge off a point with a jig and minnow-produced fish in every size and shape you could imagine.
Catch this same angling experience I witnessed in Northwest Ontario by booking your dream vacation with the folks at Moosehorn Lodge this year, I can guarantee you will love it.
