Our Route to Walleye-Ville started with a welcoming visit by the lodge owner himself, Nick Karakis, picking us up at the boat landing, a short ride on his large pontoon boat with all our gear intact as we headed to his exclusive island paradise in the wilderness and pristine surroundings of Northwest Ontario.

From the moment you arrive, you'll feel right at home, with everything you need to unwind and reconnect with nature. Every cabin at Route Lake Lodge is situated right on the water, offering stunning views and immediate access to the pristine lake. Each cabin features 24-hour electricity powered by a combination of solar and generator energy, along with running water and full bathrooms—comforts rarely found in such a remote setting.

The fishing at Route Lake Lodge is nothing short of incredible. With over 9,000 acres of water to explore, anglers can target trophy walleye, northern pike, lake trout, smallmouth bass, and perch in one of the most pristine settings in Canada. The lake features outstanding structure, depth variations, and shoreline habitat that consistently produce big fish. Our target species was the abundant walleye of Route Lake.

First Casts in Walleye-Ville: Solitude, Structure, and Steady Action at Route Lake Lodge

The first morning of our adventure was absolutely stunning, flat calm with a beautiful sunrise and not another boat in sight as we ventured past the countless islands and natural beauty of Northwest Ontario. We began fishing a mid-lake hump with small jigs and minnows, and after a few minutes of slowly jigging off bottom, we began setting hook on a wide variety of year classes of golden barred walleye between twelve and twenty inches in length.

Was I impressed? You bet I was!

These Route Lake walleye have a very unique coloration pattern on their bellies that has a combination of black, yellow and gold all intertwined—simply gorgeous looking fish.

We fished a variety of locations with similar success and close to lunchtime, Nick suggested we try some long rocky points that taper to deeper water for some bigger walleye, and boy was he on point!

From the very first cast on a sharp tapering rock outcropping, we began hooking up with a bunch of fat-bellied Route Lake walleye that fought like smallmouth bass. We continued our awesome walleye experience for a couple more evenings and morning outings with Nick, and lost count of how many walleyes we caught and released. This place really is a walleye paradise.

Route Lake Lodge Offers Conservation-Focused Fishing and Access to Remote Bonus Lakes

To preserve the exceptional quality of this fishery, all catches over the slot limit must be released, ensuring future generations enjoy the same world-class angling. In addition to Route Lake itself, guests have access to numerous remote lakes that offer even more opportunities for unforgettable fishing adventures.

When To Go and How To Catch Walleye at Route Lake Lodge

For guests visiting Route Lake Lodge, the walleye fishing is a favourite among anglers looking for both numbers and trophy-sized fish. The best time to target walleye, according to owner Nick Karakis, is from late May through early July, when they're actively feeding in shallower waters after the spring spawn. Jigging with live minnows, leeches, or soft plastics near rocky points, submerged reefs, and drop-offs is highly effective. Evening and early morning trolling with crankbaits along weed lines and deeper structure also yields great results. Route Lake's vast, cold, oxygen-rich waters, paired with an abundance of forage fish and ideal rocky habitat, create perfect conditions for growing healthy and plentiful walleye populations.
