The best way to describe Eagle Lake Island Lodge is an island paradise in the middle of the pristine northern wilderness. There are no roads to the lodge, and no floatplanes landing at the dock. Just show up with your fishing gear, a bag of clothes, and a well-rested arm. Andy Grebe and his staff at Eagle Lake Island Lodge will take care of the rest. They pick you up at the Eagle Lake landing by boat and deliver you right to the dock, where the staff is waiting to take care of your every need. They offer a shuttle service from the airport right to the lodge, too. Down to the last detail, their level of service is unparalleled: If you need something, they’ll do their very best to make it happen.

If you’re a hardcore angler and would rather bring your own boat, 20 rods/reels, and a boat full of tackle (like I do), they welcome that, too. They have plenty of boat slips and dockside gas service for those bringing their own boats.

Eagle Lake is home to some of the best (if not the best) trophy musky, pike, and smallmouth bass I’ve ever experienced… and did I mention trophy walleye? Plus, their waters are also home to a huge population of eater-sized walleyes perfect for the frying pan. I’ve been to Eagle Lake Island lodge multiple times, and every trip has included a fish of a lifetime and plenty of shore lunch opportunities. Talk about a win-win!

If you’re looking for a whitetail or black bear hunting adventure, Eagle Lake Island Lodge offers a unique experience. All the hunting sites are boat-to from the island lodge. The guides keep all the hunting sites fresh and have cameras on all the sites, so you know you’re hunting active areas. This region has a good population of big adult bears and is well-known for trophy whitetails. Although the region was hit with a couple of harsh winters a few years back, the whitetails are making an excellent comeback. Recent reports prove the odds of bagging a trophy buck are very good.

One advantage of visiting Ontario during fall is the “cast and blast” potential. Spend a couple of days hunting and a couple of fishing—or sit in the stand part of the day and the other half setting the hook. It’s the best of both worlds to feed all your outdoor passions!

On my last trip to Eagle Lake Island Lodge, I spent a few days chasing elusive big whitetail bucks and even got owner Andy Grebe away from his lodge duties to spend some time in the boat with me. It didn’t take long (10 minutes) before we were hooked up on a monster 51-inch musky. Definitely the fish of a lifetime! The funny thing about musky fishermen, most target them with big baits. On this occasion, a nightcrawler was all that was needed... LOL! We enjoyed a lot of laughs over that and had a super successful day, which seems to be the norm at Eagle Lake Island Lodge. Pretty hard to believe, but we caught a huge musky, two walleyes over 29 inches, a big pike, and a few trophy smallmouth bass in about an hour, all within a small area… and within five minutes of the lodge!

In terms of winning presentations, don’t visit Eagle Lake Island Lodge without these must-have baits: jigs, plastics, Jiggin’ Raps, 'crawler harness spinner rigs, and crankbaits. These selections all do double-duty on Eagle Lake’s walleye and smallmouth bass. The other five tackle boxes could be filled with big baits for musky… or maybe… just dunk a crawler.

Eagle Lake Lodge History

Eagle Lake Island Lodge was established in the mid-1940s by Andy Durocher, who hauled all the logs for building the camp across the frozen lake with horses. Some years later, Ron and Dolly Buth purchased the lodge from Andy and operated it for 31 years until 2007 when Mark Randle and Mark Pflanz purchased it. It was sold again in 2014 and is run by current owners Andy Grebe and partners. Andy couldn’t be happier, which definitely shows.

Eagle Island Lake Lodge sits on an 8-acre private island surrounded by 3,000 feet of lake frontage, with seven fully modern guest cabins and a new main lodge, all with a panoramic view overlooking the lake. The cabins have all been remodelled over the past four years and are extremely comfortable with a full bathroom and refrigerator.

One thing’s for certain: Eagle Lake Island Lodge doesn’t come up short on amenities. The main lodge, which was built in 2012, has a brewpub, a world-class game room, WiFi, and satellite TV. The Island is fully powered 24/7, so don’t worry about what electronics to leave at home!

And when it comes to food, the meals at Eagle Lake Island Lodge are amazing. Guests wake up each morning to a delicious hot breakfast and are sent off each day with a superb picnic lunch so they can stay on the water longer. Of course, the exception to this is a shore lunch at the island on Tuesdays and Thursdays with all-you-can-eat walleye and fixings! The dinners are top-shelf, too, with five-star meals like prime rib, chicken, steak, and more. You will not leave hungry!

The island lodge is nestled in a perfect location—you can actually catch fish less than a minute from the dock! And everything from musky, pike, walleye, and smallmouth can be caught within sight of the lodge.

If you like to venture off the beaten path, Eagle Lake consists of over 68,000 acres of water with countless islands, points, channels, rock humps, and reefs. It would take you all summer (if not more) to fish in every spot!

In short, if you’re looking for a five-star lodge with exceptional service, and amazing trophy fishing—but at a better value than most lodges—Eagle Lake Lodge needs to be on your list! You better believe I’ll be back again next year!
