Sturgeon Lake Fishing: Walleye And Smallmouth Bonanza At Lumberjack Lodge

Fish'n Canada experiences the comeback of a Northwest Ontario gem.

Fish’n Canada was back on the road in 2024 and, this time, Ang and Pete embarked on an unforgettable adventure at Lumberjack Lodge, a hidden gem nestled on the shores of Sturgeon Lake in Northwest Ontario.

Now as an FYI, there are a bunch of Sturgeon Lakes, Sturgeon Bays, and even Sturgeon Rivers in Ontario. However, the Sturgeon Lake we’re on here seems to stay well under the radar…at least to travelling anglers!

We say “under the radar” because the locals here truly know the potential of this great body of water. It holds a wide array of gamefish species including Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Pike, Lake Trout, Muskie, Sauger, Whitefish, and Yellow Perch.

As we normally do when visiting Northwest Ontario, we wanted to concentrate on walleye, and smallies, and cross our fingers that “incidental” catches of any other species will occur.

The Fishing Experience At Lumberjack Lodge

Key Highlights From Our Trip

The Walleye Comeback

Sturgeon Lake hasn’t always been the walleye paradise it is today. From the early 1900s to 1991, mining operations along the lake severely impacted water quality, leading to a massive decline in fish populations. However, in the early 1990s, a dedicated walleye rehabilitation program began to turn things around. The MNRF, local volunteers, lodge owners, mining companies, and conservationists worked tirelessly to restore spawning beds and introduce over 13 million walleye fry into the system.

Today, thanks to these efforts, Sturgeon Lake is an incredible walleye fishery - and we got to experience it firsthand. The action was non-stop, with countless walleye and smallmouth bass keeping us busy throughout the trip.

Can You Dig It?

When we plan for a walleye and smallmouth shoot, bait is always at the top of mind. However, we did not expect 16-inch suckers to be part of the equation here.

After getting to the river mouth, Ang hooked into something that didn’t feel like any of the fish we were after and it wound up being a big sucker, broadcasting her eggs all over the boat. Turns out, this is exactly why the area was so loaded with walleye and smallmouth with every fish in the river hanging out at the mouth waiting for some free protein.

Shore Lunch Perfection

No trip to Lumberjack Lodge is complete without a classic northern Ontario shore lunch. Cooking fresh-caught walleye over an open fire, surrounded by the pristine wilderness, is something every angler needs to experience at least once.

As a bonus to their customers, Lumberjack Lodge holds a weekly fish fry held either in a huge, enclosed building or if weather permits, outdoors. It’s a great way to reflect on your fishing, meet new people and, of course, enjoy a delicious meal of freshly caught fish. This was such a bonus to our team…we loved it!
