Family Friendly Fishing Vacations

Ridgewood Cottages in the Temagami area located in Northeastern Ontario is the perfect family getaway for angling or a relaxing vacation.

Inspiring the next generation to embrace the great outdoors is one of the greatest rewards any parent could ask for. Take it from me, ever since our children were able to walk we taught them to enjoy and respect the great Northern Ontario wilderness during our many family fishing vacations all across the province.

Ridgewood Cottages in Temagami is a family-friendly place for a fishing vacation.

Sure, fishing was one of the activities we simply had to share with them, but the overall quality of family time was truly priceless.

On a recent road trip to Northeastern Ontario to the Temagami area visiting with the friendly hosts of Ridgewood Cottages on small, but beautiful Angus Lake, we saw families enjoying and experiencing the exact same quality time with their younger children as we did with our own kids many years ago.

The well-planned layout of the cottages and amenities of Ridgewood Cottages made it user-friendly for our serious fishing endeavours. It also provided the children hours of beach time, swimming, laughter, and good times while the moms and dads were relaxing on the large beach chairs or around the fire pit.

Our time was spent looking for some of the fat smallmouth bass that calls Angus lake home and with an abundance of rocky points, island points and rock piles it was as easy as easy gets locating the most aggressive bass with topwater baits and tiny jerk baits.

When the topwater bite slowed down with high mid-day sun and flat calm conditions, I fished similar areas with small Ned Rig crawfish imitations and lighter lines and caught some of my bigger smallmouth that was spitting up crawfish all over the bottom of my boat.

Smallmouth bass were not the only critters biting our baits, as many shore lunch-sized northern pike and walleye also came boat side on both the topwater and soft crawfish baits.

Enjoying a Temagami sunset at Ridgewood Cottages.

Ridgewood Cottages is a family-owned and operated business that prides itself on friendliness and cleanliness. They do whatever they can to ensure your vacation is everything you want it to be. The visitors (including us) love this personal touch and level of service provided. They offer lakeside cottages with spectacular views of the sunsets over Angus Lake.

Families come here year after year to enjoy the beach, lake, and nature. They are flexible for families of all sizes and offer one, two, three- and four-bedroom cottages—each with its own BBQ, picnic table, and fire pit. Bring your children, dog, or your extended family for a reunion, they can accommodate a total of forty people at the resort.

Feed your family shore lunches on the private picnic table after a long day on the water. After eating children can play on the sandy beach or frolic in the playground.
Enjoy smores on a campfire and a good night’s sleep in the dry and cozy cabins.

Family fishing time is quality time.

About Karl Kalonka

It's possible Karl's love for fishing began as early as the age of five. His parents took the kids on weekend trips across Ontario fishing for panfish, catfish, and bass. "I started with a bobber and worm from the time I was five years old," says Karl. These days, he has the enviable task of doing what he loves for a living, travelling across Ontario fishing, filming and producing two outdoor series, Extreme Angler and Crappie Angler TV.
