Small Fish, Big Memories: The Joy of Family Fishing in Ontario

Time moves fast when raising kids, but stepping onto an Ontario shoreline with a handful of worms and a bobber has an uncanny way of slowing it all down.

Memories are meant to be cherished—especially the ones you recognize as they’re happening. A sunrise over a quiet lake or the glow of a sunset can stop you in your tracks. But some of the most meaningful moments are the ones that seem to slip by unnoticed: childhood days that feel slow in the moment yet disappear in a blink. The outdoors has a way of slowing time, letting you see your kids in a new light, and creating memories that last a lifetime.

Some of my earliest memories are of fishing at my grandparents’ camp: a five‑gallon pail, a life jacket tied to a tree, and a dozen worms. I could spend hours at the water while my cousins played elsewhere. Now, I get to share those same moments with my own kids—and it’s become one of the greatest joys of my life.

Start Simple, Keep It Fun

My biggest advice is to keep things simple. A basic push‑button combo, a bobber, and a 1/16–1/8 oz jig tipped with a piece of worm is all you need. Look for a beaver house, sparse vegetation, or lily pads and start with panfish. Sunfish, bluegill, rock bass, perch, and the occasional largemouth bass are perfect for young anglers. At this age, quantity matters far more than size. As my oldest says, “It doesn’t matter how big the fish is—as long as I’m catching fish.” Keep them engaged, and you’ll reap the rewards.

Make Every Step Part of the Adventure

Let them enjoy the entire process. Prepping gear at home—especially making a “snackle box”—has been a huge hit. Picking out a lure at the store, stopping at a bait shop to peek into the minnow tanks, or playing with worms on the drive are all part of the fun. If you have one, filling the livewell or cooler with their catch gives them something to admire long after the fish is landed.

Introducing my sons to fishing has been one of the most rewarding experiences of parenthood. From casting in the backyard in diapers to baiting, casting, and catching fish on their own, each outing brings laughter, problem‑solving, small failures, and big successes. First catches, personal bests, and the inevitable “fish dance” all become moments you’ll never forget.

Don’t Wait—Make the Time

If you’ve been thinking about taking a child fishing—your own, a niece or nephew, or even a close friend’s—don’t wait. The chance to share those moments doesn’t last forever, and I’ve learned firsthand how quickly those early years pass. A day on the water builds curiosity, confidence, and memories that stay with them long after the fish are gone. Do yourself the favour and make the time; Ontario’s lakes and rivers are ready when you are.

Author’s Note

Becoming a parent is something I always looked forward to, and now—eight years in—I can’t imagine life without it. Watching my boys grow into the unique individuals they are today is one of my greatest joys. Sharing my passion for fishing with them and seeing them embrace it with excitement and pride reminds me how lucky I am.
