Fishful Dreams Do Come True

Landing My Favourite Species on Back-To-Back Casts at Cedar Lake Camp

If you wish for something hard enough will it come true?

If you wish you could find a lake with not another boat in sight, catching your favourite species of fish in the exact same spot on back to back to back casts would that qualify as a dream come true?

For me it does.

And I did just that on a trip to Cedar Lake Camp on Highway 105 last August.

Cedar Lake offers a world-class wilderness experience and some of the best fishing in Northwest Ontario, Canada. Located a half mile off Highway 105 on scenic Clear Lake and 170 miles north of International Falls, Minnesota. There are many varieties of fish that reach trophy size on this lake. This Camp promotes a catch and release of the larger fish to sustain excellent fishing for future generations. Fishing for northern pike, walleye, muskie, bass, jumbo yellow perch, and slab-sized crappie are all in abundance. With its many weed beds, rocky shorelines, and sunken rock formations, Cedar Lake provides some of the finest fishing found anywhere.

My goal was to locate some areas with an abundance of different fish species such as northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, and crappie and with the assistance of the lodge owners and family who reside at the property we set out to locate such a location.

We found a small back bay with a waterfall spilling fresh water into the lake that created a deeper cavity below the waterfalls that attracted all the species of fish I sought in my dream location.

As this was the middle of August and the water temperatures were at their peak I wasn’t sure we could locate all of the species of my desire in water depths ranging from six to twelve feet of water below the spillway current of the waterfall.

Fishing with a simple ball head jig and either worm or minnow I was in an angler’s dream having the location all to myself for days on end and caught good numbers of walleye in the fourteen inches to eighteen-inch range along with a bunch of jumbo yellow perch, slab crappies and some smaller northern pike on this simple jig set up. Many on back-to-back casts to the exact same areas.

This trip to Cedar Lake was one I will remember for many years to come in terms of the simple enjoyment of being in a pristine wilderness setting, catching more fish than I could count, and enjoying a traditional Ontario shore lunch of walleye, perch, and crappie all at one sitting on a remote island.

Here’s why you should consider this operator for your next angling dream come true.

Cedar Lake Camp has eleven fully modern cottages of various sizes to accommodate groups of two to twelve. The cottages are situated close to shore with a porch and an unobstructed view of the lake, just a few steps from your dock and boat. They make available boats and motors that will take you around the lake so you can get in on the best fishing action.

Every cottage is spotlessly cleaned prior to guests’ arrival. They each have their own private bath with lots of hot water and are fully equipped with a refrigerator, microwave, gas range, cooking utensils, and dishes. A grill and picnic table are also provided. Bedroom arrangements include single and double beds and/or combo bunks with pillows. Automatic propane heat is provided as well.

About Karl Kalonka

It's possible Karl's love for fishing began as early as the age of five. His parents took the kids on weekend trips across Ontario fishing for panfish, catfish, and bass. "I started with a bobber and worm from the time I was five years old," says Karl. These days, he has the enviable task of doing what he loves for a living, travelling across Ontario fishing, filming and producing two outdoor series, Extreme Angler and Crappie Angler TV.
