Angling Escape to Edgewater

Just 3 hours north of Toronto, this amenity-packed resort is fun for the whole family.

Escape from reality to the not-so-distant wilderness setting of a classic Northern Ontario lodge only a few hours north of the big city known as Toronto at Edgewater Park Lodge, a four-season operator that is one of the best-kept secrets to those that return each and every year to breath the clean fresh air of Kearney, Ontario.

Our very first impression was this: The lodge was a pleasant surprise. Well-kept property and beautiful spot on the lake. The place was very clean. Lots of updates and upgrades. We stayed in the hotel. Nice room and comfy bed.

As a lodge that caters to families and outdoorsmen alike, this four season location is just as busy throughout the winter months as they are at any other time of the year.

It is not solely the fine fishing opportunities that abound around the lodge but the numerous outdoor activities that attract families from all over the globe. Located on Sand Lake, one of the most gorgeous, clean, freshwater lakes located next to Algonquin Park in Almaguin Highlands, Edgewater Park Lodge sits on 530 feet of its pristine shoreline. The shallow sandy waters are perfect for families. The lodge amenities include a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard, basketball, exercise room, walking/biking trails as well as rental canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. All this makes the lodge popular with the rest of the family while the dads are catching dinner.

For rainy days, they have a lounge available to all guests in the lower level of the motel with comfy couches, satellite TV, and board games.

Our trip to Edgewater Park Lodge was in late fall, with magnificent trees in full colour, and clean crisp mornings mixed with fun days of catching both walleye and smallmouth bass on nearby lakes topped with excellent meals prepared by resident chefs in the spacious dining area of the lodge. Yes, guys, lots of TV screens surround the dining lounge to enjoy your favourite sporting events while sipping an after-dinner beverage with friends and family.

This place really knows how to spoil its guests.

We fished a nearby lake that is similar to most of the lakes in this region, shallow and deep-water basins with lots of rock and weeds that harbour walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, a variety of trout, and some muskie. I found fish fast by snapping hair jigs on first weed line edges and rock points from eight to twelve feet of water and just kept my trolling motor on slow and dissected the slow breaks and caught my fair share of both walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass each day of the trip.

After each entertaining day of fishing, we settled into a home-cooked meal in the lounge, drank some fine beverages, and retreated to our cabin and big comfy beds —in preparation for doing it all over again tomorrow.

Our spacious two-bedroom cabin featured an exterior deck, BBQ, and fire pit.

Cozy? Yes.

Come enjoy magnificent sunsets and sunrises from your front door and all the amenities they offer here at Edgewater Park Lodge, four seasons of the year.

About Karl Kalonka

It's possible Karl's love for fishing began as early as the age of five. His parents took the kids on weekend trips across Ontario fishing for panfish, catfish, and bass. "I started with a bobber and worm from the time I was five years old," says Karl. These days, he has the enviable task of doing what he loves for a living, travelling across Ontario fishing, filming and producing two outdoor series, Extreme Angler and Crappie Angler TV.
