Step into Wilderness: A Fall Trip to Cochrane
In Northeastern Ontario’s boreal forest, Cochrane has some unusual claims to fame. It’s Tim Horton’s hometown, the southern terminus of the Polar Bear Express to James Bay, and home to the world’s only facility dedicated to caring for polar bears.
On this three to five-day adventure, you’ll chill with resident polar bears Henry and Ganuk, and visit the hometown museum of Tim Horton, who won four Stanley Cups with the Leafs (yes, the Leafs). Cast for walleye on the Abitibi River, head into the bush after moose and bear, or end the day with a movie at the historic Empire Theatre. Hike an ice-age landscape of kettle lakes and towering esker ridges, or for a bigger outing, make the two-hour day trip north to the thundering gorge of New Post Falls.
With an extra day or two, ride the train north to Moosonee to learn about Cree culture and the fur trade near James Bay.
