Discover Sun and Sand at Sudbury's Blue Flag Beaches

The Northern Ontario city's two eco-certified Blue Flag beaches are a beach lover's paradise.

The city of Sudbury, Ontario is home to two of just 17 Blue Flag designated beaches in Canada—an accomplishment the city is very proud of. Blue Flag beaches are monitored by the international Foundation for Environmental Education and must meet strict environmental, educational, and safety standards.

Sudbury has more lakes than any other municipality in Canada. As you can imagine the city's two blue flag beaches—Bell Park Beach and Moonlight Beach—are the region's best summer swimming spots!

Here's everything you need to know about Sudbury's premium beaches.

1. Blue Flag Beach: Bell Park Beach

Bell Park Beach; a girl stands on a green grassy hill on a summer day, looking out over a calm blue lake, edged in sandy beach under a clear blue sky. A lifeguard chair sits at one end of the beach, and there are people sitting on a park bench near the water.

Lake Ramsey’s Bell Park Beach is perfect for tourists and locals! This sand beach features a lifeguarded waterfront, gazebos for picnicking, washrooms, a snack bar in case you forget a lunch, and a children’s play structure. Don’t feel like swimming? Tour the two kilometers boardwalk around Ramsey Lake, cycle the forest trails, or feed the local ducks instead.

Situated South of Sudbury’s downtown district, this beach is in walking distance to some of Sudbury’s best attractions including Science North, the Art Gallery of Sudbury, and the Downtown core. Make sure to check out Bell Park’s main beach this summer at the peak of its’ glory when it hosts Sudbury’s annual Dragon Boat RacesBudweiser New Music FestSudbury Jazz Festival, and Northern Lights Festival Boreal.

2. Blue Flag Beach: Moonlight Beach

Moonlight Beach; a large playground surrounded by sand, next to a sandy beach by a calm blue lake skirted by green forest. The summer sky is glowing with a light pink and blue sunset.

Located on the eastern shores of Ramsey Lake, Moonlight Beach is a beautiful place to take a dip! It is one of Sudbury’s hidden treasures. Its lengthy waterfront, picnic areas, and playground are an outdoor haven from the hustle and bustle of our busy city. Looking to spend the whole day enjoying the outdoors? Hike Rainbow Routes’ 3.5 km trail from the Lake Laurentian Conservation Area to Moonlight Beach, then enjoy the beautiful scenery and refresh afterward with a swim!
