Beyond Downtown: Greater Sudbury Day Trips Worth the Detour!
Sudbury isn’t just about the Big Nickel. A multi-dimensional gem, the city is home to distinct communities, each rewarding visitors with northern charm and character. While staying downtown may be tempting, those willing to explore the bigger picture are rewarded with rich history, delicious markets, and inspirational parks. From Capreol to Chelmsford, Greater Sudbury engages and entertains visitors of all ages with experiences that make these day trips worth the detour.
Capreol: Rail Town Heritage, Riverside Eats, and Family-Friendly Attractions
A deep-rooted rail town, Capreol’s appeal combines history with culture. Explore downtown and get a feel for Capreol’s cherished shops and bistros, including M & R Grill for breakfast and butter tarts, Fire House Bar & Grill’s mouthwatering burger and fries. Dine in, or take it to go and enjoy it on a picnic table lining the peaceful Vermillion River, where forest greens complement blissful blues.
The Northern Ontario Railroad Museum gives visitors a glimpse into the region’s rail, lumber and mining industries through educational and engaging exhibits. The museum’s Heritage Centre features interactive experiences, which include climbing inside a restored locomotive or caboose, stepping into the life of a firefighter courtesy of Pumper #4 (a 1986 Ford Superior), and operating a locomotive simulator. Marvel at the intricate model railroad, and head downstairs to see Capreol’s original jail.
Capreol also hosts some fun, seasonal annual events with a small-town feel, which makes a perfect excuse to get out of the city for the weekend (take a look at the NORMHC events page or Facebook for details). Capreol Days is a traditional summer festival that unites the community with live music, family-friendly events, food, and all while paying tribute to the town’s proud rail roots.
Val Caron: Small-Town Charm, Local Eats, Parks, and Dinosaur Valley Mini Golf
Val Caron’s charm springs from its welcoming small-town aura. A short drive from Sudbury, it makes for a delightful escape and a leisurely, unhurried day trip. Stop into The Pickled Pig for authentic BBQ and Bitter Bill’s Ice Cream Parlour for a classic scoop before burning off the calories at any number of pristine neighbourhood parks. Creekside, Langdon Park offers a peaceful respite. Laurentian Park offers lovely Whitson Lake vistas, and Kalmo Park Conservation Area is home to Kalmo Beach, perfect for a refreshing, unwinding dip.
Wrap up the day at Dinosaur Valley Mini Golf, a fun, family-friendly mom-and-pop course where towering, larger-than-life dinosaurs set the scene for a fun round. Attached is Josephine’s Vegetables, a long-standing local favourite offering dozens of herbicide-free veggies since 1982.
Pro tip: Minutes from Val Caron, Wagonwheel Ranch in Val Therese is another family-friendly destination with pony and wagon rides. Kids will love petting the animals on-site.

You can also visit a working lavender farm and relax among the rows of purple blooms at Lavender Rose Lane.
Lively: Anderson Farm Museum, Golf, Skiing and More
A must-stop in Lively is the Anderson Farm Museum, a heritage destination commemorating Greater Sudbury’s agricultural past. Century-old barns, even a log cabin, feature prominently on the grounds of this former dairy farm, showcasing the life and times of the Andersons, a Finnish pioneer family who arrived here and, along with other Finns, established roots in the region and contributed to its growth. The Anderson Farm Museum also hosts Rock the Farm each year—don't miss this summer concert series and farmer’s market is held every Wednesday evening in August.
In the winter, Lively Ski Hill attracts family skiiers of all skill levels to enjoy a fun day on the graceful slopes, while in the summer, the Lively Golf Club is a picturesque course, perfect for a peaceful round of golf. Nearby Fielding Park offers flat hikes along Kelly Lake, not to mention the on-site bird sanctuary, which allows for ideal duck and swan sightings.

Pine scents and lake views dominate the experience, which is sprinkled with exceptional wildlife sightings.
Nearby, Whitewater Lake Park is the main gateway to a sprawling, crystal clear aquatic oasis, making for a relaxing day on the water. Bring a picnic or head into town to enjoy a pound of chicken wings at the Doghouse Sports Bar, or coffee and a sweet treat from La Jeune Cafe.
Copper Cliff: Mining History, the Superstack, and Sudbury’s Industrial Roots
A stone’s throw away from downtown Sudbury, and standing at 380 meters, the ’Superstack’ is Canada’s tallest freestanding chimney. While it’s not open to the public, this mainstay in the historic Italian community of Copper Cliff still stands as a symbol of Sudbury’s mining history and industrial heritage. The area itself was founded by the Canadian Copper Company in the late 19th-century. Its mining roots are best illustrated at the Copper Cliff Museum, a heritage log cabin located on the site of the town’s first dwelling, dating back to 1890.
That said, it's best to see the Superstack while you can, as it’s currently being slowly dismantled in small pieces—a process which is slated for completion by 2030.
