A deep-rooted rail town, Capreol’s appeal combines history with culture. Dine in, or take it to go and enjoy it on a picnic table lining the peaceful Vermillion River, where forest greens complement blissful blues.

The Northern Ontario Railroad Museum gives visitors a glimpse into the region’s rail, lumber and mining industries through educational and engaging exhibits. The museum’s Heritage Centre features interactive experiences, which include climbing inside a restored locomotive or caboose, stepping into the life of a firefighter courtesy of Pumper #4 (a 1986 Ford Superior), and operating a locomotive simulator. Marvel at the intricate model railroad, and head downstairs to see Capreol’s original jail.

Capreol also hosts some fun, seasonal annual events with a small-town feel, which makes a perfect excuse to get out of the city for the weekend (take a look at the NORMHC events page or Facebook for details). Capreol Days is a traditional summer festival that unites the community with live music, family-friendly events, food, and all while paying tribute to the town’s proud rail roots.

Copper Cliff: Mining History, the Superstack, and Sudbury’s Industrial Roots

Inco Superstacks Sudbury
Inco Superstack, Sudbury

A stone’s throw away from downtown Sudbury, and standing at 380 meters, the ’Superstack’ is Canada’s tallest freestanding chimney. While it’s not open to the public, this mainstay in the historic Italian community of Copper Cliff still stands as a symbol of Sudbury’s mining history and industrial heritage. The area itself was founded by the Canadian Copper Company in the late 19th-century. Its mining roots are best illustrated at the Copper Cliff Museum, a heritage log cabin located on the site of the town’s first dwelling, dating back to 1890.

That said, it's best to see the Superstack while you can, as it’s currently being slowly dismantled in small piecesa process which is slated for completion by 2030.
