Top Gluten-Free Casual Dining in Sudbury

The Pickled Pig Kitchen & Bar

This popular spot, which has outdoor seating as well as dine-in, has dozens of gluten-free options on the menu, ranging from nacho tots and peanut butter French toast to lemon-pepper haddock, barbecue brisket, poutine and a veggie burger.

The Laughing Buddha

This popular family-owned pizza place features a diverse menu and a gorgeous outdoor patio for warmer weather. Local gluten-free diners recommend their gluten-free pizzas, which include the Holy Cow (double pepperoni and four cheeses) and the Hala Kahiki Ali (pineapple and prosciutto), as well as the Chicken Nova sandwich on locally made gluten-free bread.

The Townehouse Tavern

Helmed by the same family owners as The Laughing Buddha, The Townehouse Tavern is beloved in Sudbury for its burgers made with sustainably sourced beef, as well as its +30-year history of hosting rockin’ live music events, all in a cool old building. Burger options include the Fat Cowboy or the Classic, made with gluten-free buns from local bakery Gluten Free Galore.

Ripe

Ripe has a large menu of upscale casual dishes, including some gluten-friendly items. Opt to have your pizza made with cauliflower crust and then topped with a variety of ooey-gooey cheeses, veggies, meats and other toppings, or go for gluten-free penne as part of their pasta lineup.

M.I.C. Restaurant

“M.I.C.” stands for “Made in Canada” and this laidback restaurant and whisky pub serves up plenty of local ingredients, surrounded by Canadiana décor. Atlantic mussels, salmon arugula salad, Cobb salad, ribs, beef, brown butter pickerel and poutine all have the gluten-free symbol on their menu, plus you can opt for a gluten-free bun for their burgers.

Tucos Taco Lounge

Did someone say housemade corn tortillas? Tucos Taco Lounge is a popular go-to in Sudbury and fortunately, there are several gluten-free dishes on the menu. Go for the asada nachos, the Buffalo tempeh kale salad or the totopos and salsa, or check out the monthly specials.

Discover authentic Thai food at Ricelicious. A peek at their gluten-free menu shows nearly 20 gluten-free options like mango salad, pad thai and a variety of curries, as well as a couple dozen more fried rice, tofu and noodle dishes that can be made without gluten ingredients.

Rose Apple

Rose Apple is an Asian fusion restaurant with a gluten-free menu that includes pad thai and sushi, and they also have gluten-free soy sauce.

Sapporo Ichibang

Japanese and Korean fare is on the menu at Sapporo Ichibang, Sudbury’s original Japanese restaurant. Gluten-free sushi options range from California roll and spicy tuna to Philly roll and yellowtail. There’s also a large gluten-free seafood menu (shrimp, crab, octopus, scallops and more).

JD Fusion Smokehouse

JD Fusion Smokehouse features a huge assortment of Indian and Chinese dishes. Some gluten-free menu items include hot ‘n’ sour soup, Szechuan fried rice, Singapore rice, masala fries, and a big range of curry, dal, paneer, masala and vegetable-based dishes. Don’t forget dessert—check out rasgulla (dumplings) and kulfi (traditional Indian ice cream).

Gluten-free penne pasta is available at The Daventry, a friendly and casual neighbourhood pub. Choose from carbonara, chicken parmesan or shrimp and prosciutto toppings. Check out their menu for options.

Di Gusto

Di Gusto is in the gluten-friendly category: gluten-free pasta is available but their menu states “not suitable for celiac because of cross-contamination.” If that caveat works for you, choose from a range of pastas made in-house, with plenty of versions of savoury Italian classics in a contemporary setting.

The Kouzzina

Discover a range of classic and contemporary Italian and Greek dishes at this long-standing family-owned restaurant. For diners looking for gluten-friendly fare, many menu options can be made with gluten-free naan, pasta and pizza dough. Another go-to is the gluten-free peanut butter brownie cheesecake.

Tony V’s Pizza and Restaurant

There are several gluten-free options at Tony V’s (note the menu states that the gluten-free products may have accidental contact with gluten). Local favourites include the ravioli topped with meat or tomato sauce, cheese pizza with two toppings made with Gluten Free Galore items, as well as chicken souvlaki.

Markets and Stores: Where to Buy Gluten-Free Groceries and Baked Goods in Sudbury

If you’re looking to pick up your own meals and snacks, there are several stores in town that carry gluten-free products. The Valley Market is a family-run general store that offers local gluten-free products like Not Only Ice Cream and Gluten Free Galore, which provides fresh and frozen items (ravioli, butter tarts and more) made in a dedicated gluten-free facility. Amici Food + Beverage Co is a specialty grocery store with a gluten-free bakery where you can get smoothies, cupcakes, bread and seasonal treats like decorated cookies. Another spot to keep in mind is Farmer Jill’s Baked Goods, which has delivery as well as a local pick-up spot for orders placed in advance (and is owned and run by a person with celiac disease). Check out their bagels, sourdough bread and treats. Local distillery Crosscut has a few gluten-free specialty items for crafting cocktails, including gluten-free non-alcoholic tequila, hot sauce and olive brine.
