Family Friendly Fishing Getaways in Northern Ontario

Fish TV rediscovers Ontario fishing lodges in Northern Ontario for smallmouth bass and walleye. Perfect for a family summer or fall vacation.

Well, it has been a very long two years and it feels good to get back to a somewhat normal life. The best thing that I have noticed in Ontario is that the fishing has gotten better as there has been very little pressure on the fish for almost the same length of time.

We at Fish TV had the opportunity to fish some fantastic locations when we could travel again and I would just love to touch on a few. Algoma Country has some of the best fishing in the world and our crew was lucky enough to travel to two memorable lodges.

The first stop was Wakomata Lake Cottages and our second stop on this trip was Dunlop Lake Lodge in the Elliot Lake area. Algoma Country has beautiful untouched water and incredible wildlife and it is one area that you have to visit! We caught 50 to 75 smallmouth a day on drop shots with some giant northern pike thrown in. The rolling forests and endless lakes here make for memories that will last forever.

First I want to talk about Wakomata Lake Cottages. This lodge has everything you could need on a vacation, with its homemade food in the quaint restaurant that will keep you coming back looking for what’s next on the menu or you can cook your meals right at your cabin as they are equipped with a kitchen and BBQ. The nature trail that you can walk from your cabin is a beautiful peaceful walk through the woods with all kinds of wildlife to enjoy. From your cabin, it’s a very short walk to a sandy swimming area and right beside that there are docks to hold your boat so you can jump right in and head out fishing. The lake is big enough to hold many trophy fish but not too big that you will get blown off the water in windy weather.

We moved on to Dunlop Lake Lodge which has everything in a lodge you can imagine. From its fantastic restaurant that has live entertainment, to the incredible food that even the locals rave about. Located right on one of the OFSC snowmobile trails, it has easy access and tons of parking for those people that love to sled. The cabins are fantastic and can even hold a big group as they have all different size cabins and rooms. If it’s spring, summer or fall you are looking at, the fishing is excellent as the lake is full of lake trout, smallmouth, and panfish for the kids. And if it’s just sitting and relaxing by the lake, they offer some great water access for swimming and fun things to do down by the water.

deep-water-lodge

Another area that we visited was Temagami and a resort we found called Deepwater Lodge. It’s located in Northeastern Ontario and this place is situated on a beautiful island on Lake Temagami. With its abundance of fish and its outstanding accommodations and restaurant, this is a vacation that will give you memories for life. Small lakes all around the lodge are full of fish…from lake trout to smallmouth bass, you cannot drive by this place! We shot a full episode here in a half-day with thirty smallmouths up to five pounds. That same day a friend of ours landed a fourteen-pound walleye so this lake is no joke when it comes to trophy-size fish! And if it’s ice fishing and snowmobiling that you enjoy, this is the location for you, with snowmobile trails and rented ice huts and you just might pull a record fish out of this lake.

With things starting to open up again and people travelling within Ontario, these are just a few places you should put on your bucket list. Look up these locations and book your holiday…Spring, winter, summer or fall, Ontario has it all!
