Kashabowie Bass Blast

Kashabowie River Resort is a perfect family or buddies' vacation with excellent fishing, and outdoor recreation for swimming, paddling, and relaxing in the Northern Ontario wilderness.

I love Ontario’s Superior Country.

From the very first time I experienced this wilderness landscape, I understood why folks call this region ‘God’s Country’. It would literally take a lifetime to fish a fraction of these pristine fish-filled lakes of this region of Northern Ontario.

On a recent trip near Thunder Bay and Atikokan, we had the pleasure of visiting with the nice folks who own and operate Kashabowie River Resort, Kyle and Tracey who set us up in a nice clean cottage overlooking the river and were nice enough to invite us to share our meals with their family and friends during our trip.

And, let me tell you, Tracey is one heck of a cook! (P.S. They do offer American Plan meals)

Fishing At Kashabowie

Our trip began on the day before walleye season opening in the bay. The resort is situated with a fast-moving river mouth and rapids emptying into the lake a cast length from the resort docks so we fished with lodge owner Kyle the day before walleye opener on the main lake system for smallmouth bass and northern pike. Our angling adventure began at first light as we headed to a shallow back bay with scattered boulders and rock piles that looked like a bass paradise.

We began casting top water poppers on the slick calm morning and found the bigger smallmouth bass wanted a ‘slow down’ approach this morning instead of the traditional loud splashing poppers create. After catching a few pounders and as the sun began to rise, warming the back bay, the bass became a lot more active and, on several occasions, we hooked two bass at one time on the same popper, talk about aggressive!

Kyle took the time to show me a lot of different locations of the system and we ventured out of the back bay to a set of islands with gravel rock and sand leading to deeper edges from island points and we began catching bigger bass with tiny tube jigs and hair jigs. We also caught some very nice walleye on those same bass locations right close to shore.

Some of the finest fishing in Superior Country is found on Shebandowan Lake. The lake is approximately twenty-five miles long, dotted with many islands and bays and features miles of picturesque shoreline. Northern pike, walleye, and smallmouth are abundant and there are several lakes available to portage to for lake trout, speckled trout and trophy northern.

The next morning, walleye opener, we fished literally right in front of the resort and caught an assortment of walleye, northern pike and smallmouth bass up to five pounds using the same light jigs and leeches bounced off the bottom. And right to the left of us, guests were catching their limits of walleye right off the docks.
