Whitefish Lake Walleye

A true Canadian walleye adventure!

I have been very fortunate in my line of work to be able to fish for so many different species of game fish in countless locations but this singular road trip to Ontario’s Superior Country near Thunder Bay was absolutely a walleye fishing adventure I will never forget.

Let me set the stage for this adventure.

It is the middle of August, with soaring hot temperatures, bluebird clear skies and dead calm conditions and we are supposed to shoot a show catching walleyes on a lake with sparse weeds ranging from six to eight feet of water.

All perfect reasons why the walleye fishing COULD be tough. Not here. This lake impressed the heck out of me and it will impress you too.

The lake is Whitefish Lake.

This lake has been attracting anglers generation after generation. Whitefish Lake is located just thirty-five miles from the U.S.-Canadian border crossing at Pigeon River and a short fifty-minute drive from Thunder Bay, Ontario. Whitefish Lake is approximately 11.7 square miles and primarily five to twenty-two feet deep, draining into Lake Superior via the river Arrow its crystal-clear spring-fed water with an abundance of vegetation boasts the perfect condition for walleye, northern pike, and jumbo perch. Whitefish Lake is one of the few lakes that can sustain a 100 perch limit.

No wonder the walleye grow so big on this lake, the yellow perch are everywhere!

We stayed with the gracious hosts at Ole's Adventure Resort.

They offer boat rentals and have a docking system that can accommodate larger boats and pontoons. Fishing licenses are available on-site for your convenience. If you are looking for a pull-in campsite they have large lakefront and beautiful park-side campsites, nestled in your own piece of paradise. All sites are equipped with full-service thirty-amp water and pumping facilities available.

We caught the majority of our walleye with a local angler who resides at the park and has fished the lake for years combined with his knowledge of the lake and simple technique of keeping the trolling motor on low speeds while making long casts to either side of the bow of the boat with four-inch curly-tailed grubs on one-quarter ounce jig heads in white or orange, using a slow cast and retrieve cadence we had no issues whatsoever catching walleye from thirteen inches to twenty-eight inches roaming the scattered cabbage weed flats on this beautiful lake.

And best of all, we fished within sight of the resort each day, you don’t have to go far to catch walleye on this lake.

Being on a fishing trip on Whitefish Lake should not mean that you sacrifice the comforts of home. At Ole’s Resort, they take pride in their fully equipped clean comfortable cabins. They understand what is important to their guests and aim to meet all their needs. That is why they try and equip all of the cabins with the amenities of home. The goal is to make you as comfortable as we can and I can assure you we got that exact feeling the moment we entered our cabin. As clean and modern as it gets, we loved it.

It's possible Karl's love for fishing began as early as the age of five. His parents took the kids on weekend trips across Ontario fishing for panfish, catfish, and bass. "I started with a bobber and worm from the time I was five years old," says Karl. These days, he has the enviable task of doing what he loves for a living, travelling across Ontario fishing, filming and producing two outdoor series, Extreme Angler and Crappie Angler TV.
