Ontario’s Backroads and Waterways
Powerboating Destinations: Lake of the Woods and Lake Temiskaming
If you’re serious about powerboat cruising, there’s simply no match for Lake of the Woods. With 14,000 islands and more shoreline than Lake Superior, these waters offer unlimited potential for discoveries.
First timers should indulge in a weekend of exploring with a full set of nautical charts. This is a complex waterway and isn’t made for the unprepared. Massive rock faces are plentiful, as are lodges that cater to captains and crew. We recommend Crow Rock for the best fish dinner on the water.
Lake Temiskaming, on the other side of the province in Northeastern Ontario, is a similarly beguiling waterway. While the Great Lakes, Trent-Severn, Georgian Bay and North Channel are all renowned for their pleasure cruising opportunities, it’s Temiskaming’s hidden-gem status that makes it so desirable. Check this link for a video and complete list of amenities on the lake.
Learn To Ride And Go Epic In One Season
Last year, Ontario invited Dave and Deb, bloggers at “The Planet D”, to learn to ride, work their skills up over a number of day trips, and then do the bucket list trip around Lake Superior—all in one season.
Their adventure started with training from Ontario-based Ginny Allen and her Motorsoul Riding School in downtown Toronto. From there, they took their first trip on the back roads of Grey and Bruce Counties, then some dirt-bike training at Trail Tours outside Peterborough. A final weekend trip in Peterborough and the Kawarthas was the last proof needed to show they were ready to take on the majestic Ride Lake Superior.
Their entire adventure was captured on video and is available on YouTube—go check it out and see just how easy it is to get into riding in Ontario.
Adventure North
In its earliest stages of release to the public, five cities in Northeastern Ontario have gathered to release a series of adventure bike trails (ADV) that touch some of Ontario’s most remote and pristine areas. Have you ever taken a chain-winch ferry? Or have you seen one of the world’s largest hydro dams buried hundreds of miles off the beaten path? Or have you ridden past one of the last standing fire towers in Ontario? If you’re ready to venture out past the limits of the ordinary, these are the routes for you. Only gravel eaters need apply.
