Where to Find Canoe and Kayak Rentals In Ontario

For many paddlers, renting a canoe or kayak at a destination makes great sense. New paddlers can try a canoe rental or kayak rental to see if they like the sport. Often seasoned paddlers find it is easier to get canoe and kayak rentals in Ontario at remote locations than to transport their own from home.

The incredible diversity of waters to explore in Ontario calls for a variety of watercraft best suited to each location. Venturing into Algonquin Park? Hundreds of small lakes and portages favour those travelling by ultralight canoe. Headed onto the open waters of Georgian Bay? Wind and waves are best tackled in touring kayaks with watertight hatches. Local outfitters offer excellent equipment and trip planning services.

Whether you rent or buy, you’ll need to learn and practice basic paddling safety skills like strokes and rescues before setting out. Visit Paddle Canada to find a course or certified instruction provider near you. Taking a course is also a great way to meet other paddlers in your area.

Canoe and kayak paddlers in Ontario will need to have a few pieces of mandatory safety equipment on board—always check with your outfitter that your rental includes these items, or bring your own:

• a Canadian Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device (PFD) for each person
• a whistle (all PFDs should come with one included); paddle(s)
• 15 metres of buoyant throw line
• a bailer or pump
• a watertight flashlight (if your canoe or kayak is over six metres long, or if you’ll be paddling before sunrise or after sunset).

Rental rates for partial days average between $25 and $35 per boat for two to four hours. Expect to pay between $40 and $65 per canoe for Ontario canoe rentals and around the same price per kayak for Ontario kayak rentals, for a full day. Many outfitters offer reduced daily rates for weekend and weeklong rentals. Remember that rates will vary with the type of boat and geographic location.
