Did you know that Northern Ontario stretches across roughly 800,000 km of Canadian Shield, boreal forest and freshwater shorelines? It’s impossible to do it all in a single weekend, or even one week!
What a lot of road trippers do when they visit the North is focus on one route. This gives you enough to figure out travel days, adventure days, and what to see and do to help make the most of the trip. But the greatest thing about Northern Ontario is that you can plan to come back again for a different adventure every time.
Below are some 3-day road trips in each region, designed to fit interests, starting locations and trip style. Take these ideas and add to them!
Region: Algoma Country
Starting Point: Sault Ste. Marie (ideal for U.S. visitors or those coming from Southern Ontario)
Dramatic granite cliffs, clear waters and Group of Seven landscapes are calling to visitors on this segment of a Lake Superior 3-day road trip:
Day 1: Pick up fresh apple fritters at the Voyageurs’ Lodge in Batchawana Bay, relax on the sands of Pancake Bay Provincial Park, or hike to the breathtaking clifftop overlooks at Robertson Cliffs in the Algoma Highlands Conservancy for views of the Big Lake.
Day 2: Spend a full day exploring Lake Superior Provincial Park. There are 11 different hiking trails within the park. Some of our favourite stops include the Sand River (Pinguisibi) Trail, the Nokomis Trail, or catching the sunset at Old Woman Bay.
Day 3: Arrive in Wawa to pose with the iconic Wawa Goose, grab a giant pickle at Young’s General Store, and marvel at Scenic High Falls on the Magpie River before making your return drive.
Other stops along this route you’ll love are: Agawa Crafts and the Canadian Carver, Agawa Fish and Chips, Katherine Cove, and Sandy Beach. Region: Northeastern Ontario
Starting Point: Toronto or Ottawa
This region of Northern Ontario is a good place to start dipping your toes into the North for the first time. The loop we’re suggesting provides cool attractions, gentle wilderness and vibrant waterfront dining, within a comfortable few hours from Southern Ontario.
Day 1 (North Bay): Start your North Bay Road Trip along the shores of Lake Nipissing. Stroll the waterfront boardwalk, take a sunset cruise aboard the Chief Commanda II, and grab a meal for casual pub fare at The Boat North Bay.
Day 2 (Sudbury): Head west to Sudbury. Spend the morning exploring interactive science exhibits at Science North and taking photos under the Big Nickel, play some mini golf at Dinosaur Valley Mini Golf, then drop by Regency Bakery & Deli to grab scratch-made Italian pastries, hot arancini, and gourmet paninis for a lakefront lunch.
Day 3 (Killarney): Drive down Highway 69 to the French River Visitor Centre to walk over the suspension bridge or make a scenic detour to Killarney to grab fried perch, shrimp tacos, and a cold drink on the waterfront sundeck at The Pier before heading south.
Region: Algoma Country
Starting Point: Sudbury or Sault Ste. Marie
If your favourite part of road-tripping is eating like a local, this route highlights the historic bakeries, chip stands, and specialty food markets strung along the Highway 17 corridor.
Day 1: Start in Sturgeon Falls with scratch-made pies and butter tarts from Chez Jean-Marc Bakery, then travel west through Blind River for lunch at the Butterfly Grill, Mississaugi Fry Company and the Sunshine Smash Shack.
Day 2: Stop in Thessalon for fresh-cut fries at the Popp'in Bay Take Away, then head across the causeway to St. Joseph Island. Sample local maple fudge, fresh baking and ice cream at The Wharf and browse the historic 1888 Kentvale General Store.
Day 3: Wrap up in Sault Ste. Marie. Stock a picnic basket with regional cheeses, fresh-cured Italian meats, and local preserves from Paesano Foods, Bruni's Fine Foods, or City Meat Market before enjoying a waterfront lunch along the St. Marys River.
Region: Northeastern Ontario
Starting Point: Sudbury (via Hwy 6) or Tobermory (via MS Chi-Cheemaun Ferry)
Manitoulin is the largest freshwater island in the world—a tranquil paradise of limestone shorelines, Indigenous culture, and rolling farmland.
Day 1: Arrive via Little Current or off the ferry at South Baymouth. Drive to Kagawong to visit the stunning Bridal Veil Falls, tour Manitoulin Chocolate Works, and walk the quiet bay shoreline.
Day 2: Hike the Bebamikawe Memorial Trail in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory for quiet panoramic lookouts over the North Channel without the crowds. Afterward, explore the local Indigenous heritage along the trail's cultural stops or head to Providence Bay Beach to relax along one of the softest sand beaches in the province.
Day 3: Visit local artisan galleries, pick up wild berry preserves and smoked fish at island country stores, and enjoy a relaxed farm-to-table meal before taking the scenic drive back across the historic Little Current Swing Bridge.
Region: Sunset Country
Starting Point: Winnipeg or Thunder Bay
Just two hours east of Winnipeg, this Sunset Country getaway immerses you in the classic cottage-and-craft lifestyle centred around Lake of the Woods.
Day 1: Visit Kenora’s downtown. Snap a photo with Husky the Muskie at Whitecap Pavilion, browse fresh local baking and crafts at Matiowski Farmers Market, and stop by The Cornerstone for stone-oven pizzas and cold local brews.
Day 2: Hop aboard the MS Kenora for a scenic sightseeing cruise through the island-dotted channels of Lake of the Woods. Spend the afternoon paddling at Anicinabe Park or renting a pontoon boat for a private island shore lunch you've cooked yourself. If you prefer a more tailored experience, book a guided fishing tour with Blue Heron Lake Tours to fish for walleye, muskie, and lake trout and enjoy a fantastic shore lunch.
Day 3: Take a scenic drive down Highway 71 to Sioux Narrows to cross the historic wooden swing bridge and explore local artisan gift shops. Stop by the Northern Ontario Sport Fishing Centre to immerse yourself in the region’s deep lake culture before making your return trip west.
Region: Superior Country
Starting Point: Thunder Bay or Duluth, MN
Featuring a waterfall, amethyst mines, and the towering Sleeping Giant, this route delivers nonstop natural marvels.
Day 1: Explore Thunder Bay. Visit Fort William Historical Park, pick up local smoked lake trout at The Fish Shop, and marvel at Kakabeka Falls—known as the "Niagara of the North".
Day 2: Drive out onto the Sleeping Giant Peninsula. Hike the Top of the Giant Trail for dramatic views over Lake Superior from 950-foot cliffs, then stop by the Silver Islet General Store for local jams and sharp cheddar.
Day 3: Head east toward Nipigon and Red Rock. Walk out onto the Nipigon Bridgeview Lookout Tower, hunt for colourful rocks at Pebble Beach in Marathon, and dig for your own gemstones at a local open-pit amethyst mine.
Coming from Toronto/Southern Ontario: Stick to the Sudbury & North Bay Loop, Manitoulin Island, or the Highway 17 Culinary for minimal transit time and maximum vacation time.

Coming from the U.S. (Michigan/Minnesota)? Cross at Sault Ste. Marie for the Algoma / Wawa Route, or cross at Grand Portage/Pigeon River for Thunder Bay & Superior Country.
