A Northern Ontario Tradition Since 1964
Launched in 1964, the Bon Soo Winter Carnival began as a community celebration created to bring excitement and activity to the city during the quiet early winter months. Local artist Ken MacDougall designed the festival’s iconic mascot, Mr. Bon Soo, named by a young Sault Ste. Marie resident, and from humble beginnings, the event has grown into a nine-day winter tradition celebrating the best of winter fun.
What To Expect at the Bon Soo Winter Carnival in Sault Ste. Marie
Today, Bon Soo continues to bring people together each February with a mix of classic and evolving events. Signature activities include bum slides that send participants careening down icy chutes, the daring Polar Bear Plunge into frigid waters, live music, community dinners, exhibitions and family-friendly games across downtown Sault Ste. Marie. The festival is proudly powered by volunteers and community support, welcoming locals and visitors alike to celebrate winter with light hearts and all the joy of the season.
Bon Soo’s 63rd annual celebration runs from February 13–21, 2026, with programming in multiple zones throughout the city, including downtown plazas, Canal District sites and parks featuring a full slate of activities for all ages. Meet Mr. Bon Soo: The Snowman Who Never Melts
Every year, Mr. Bon Soo (a friendly and fun snowman, who luckily never melts) is the conductor of the festival. He is an attraction in and of himself, with children squealing at the chance to say hi (and maybe even get a hug!) from him. He can be spotted by his large white head, red suit and hat, and shiny black boots.
