Best Sandwiches In Sudbury

Sudbury, Ontario, is home to a bunch of diverse restaurants featuring everything from vegan tacos to classic Italian dishes. What this northern city is perhaps best known for, however, at least among knowledgeable locals, is its iconic sandwiches. These sandwiches are tall. They are decadent. They’re often meat-forward. And many are steeped in local history—and featured on TV.
Read on to discover the best sandwiches in Sudbury–from the unique porchetta to the decadent panini to the classic and comforting grilled cheese. Have your heart set on a specific sammie? Be sure to call ahead–these bad boys often sell out, and some are only available on weekends!
Here are the best sandwiches to try while exploring Sudbury.
1. The Paul Bunyan from Cora’s Convenience

This tall big boy of a deli sandwich has been a Sudbury icon for decades. It’s available at a classic convenience store (with a dining area) that features a mural of the sandwich’s namesake—Paul Bunyan. Filled with ham, turkey, roast beef, pastrami, capicola and salami, the Paul Bunyon is topped with lettuce, onions and cheese, all stacked up high in a baguette. It is meaty and spicy—with inches of layered meat. A sandwich lover’s dream.
Hot tip: While the Paul Bunyan is available any day of the week, if you want the real freshly-made deli experience you have to go on a weekday—that’s when the chef prepares them hot and fresh.
2. Porchetta and Egg from Beef 'n Bird

At Beef ‘n Bird, the Porketta is a local delight. In fact, porketta is a must-do in the Nickel City. Inspired by Italian porchetta—this savoury, fatty pork loin with crispy roasted skin has a little twist. Here, the secret ingredient is a bit of dill in the spice mix. It’s a unique (must-try) delicacy.
Porketta is so beloved here you can even attend Porketta Bingo at various locations around town, including at Beef ‘n Bird. On Saturday afternoon, grab your bingo cards and yell “Porketta!” to win. And of course, the winner gets to take home—you got it—a classic Sudbury Porketta. Opt for a hot Porketta sandwich, a wrapped porketta roast, or other pre-packaged meats and cheeses.
The Beef and Bird’s Porchetta and Egg is a tasty, filling must-do. Piled high with meat on a soft white bun, this is a must-do sandwich in Sudbury.
3. Chin Dripper from Peppi Panini

If you're exploring Sudbury’s sandwich scene, a must-try is the legendary Chin Dripper from local Italian favourite Peppi Panini. This indulgent sandwich lives up to its name with layers of roast beef, mozzarella, onions, and roasted mushrooms with a garlic butter sauce, all packed into a perfectly toasted panini. As one of Sudbury’s most beloved spots—and a filming location for the TV show Shoresy—it’s a messy, flavourful experience that’s worth every napkin. Pitter patter.
4. Maple Cuban Melt from M.I.C. Made In. Canadian Eatery & Whisky Pub
M.I.C. is known for its Canadian-themed restaurant and maple-flavoured menu options including the decadent Maple Cuban Melt. A Sudbury favourite, it’s only on offer during lunch so plan accordingly if you want to try this classic. Their maple-brined ham is smoked in-house over maple wood and served on sourdough stuffed with Swiss cheese, pickles, and yellow mustard. To wash it down, the Caesars are a popular option or check out the extensive Canadian whisky selection.
5. Montreal Smoked Meat Super Stack from The Daventry Kitchen and Bar
Everyone loves a classic Canadian smoked meat sandwich so add this one to your Sudbury sandwich itinerary. The Super Stack (a nod to the city’s iconic industrial chimney that graced the skyline until very recently) is a classic comfort food that brings out our inner child. After some research, we decided the smoked meat on offer from the Daventry seemed the most decadent and artisanal option available. We got curious and headed over—and we're so glad we did. The Daventry uses a butter-softened rye, paired with mustard and pickle and stacked high with smoked meat. Delicious!
