Broers (brothers), Josh and Steve Jansen opened a little wine bar business in the downtown area of Sault Ste. Marie a few years ago. Along with Josh’s wife Bethany, they set out to turn the business into a popular, intimate, destination wine bar.

I sat down with Josh Jansen, who told me about their business, Broers Jansen, and their vision for its future. “The idea was inspired by trips to Scotland, Italy and Quebec City. We saw and experienced what they were doing there and thought, we can do this in our city,” said Josh.  “We not only make our wines in-house with juices from all parts of Ontario and the world, but we also serve local craft beers, cocktails and hand-selected whiskey and scotch.”

The wine list is extensive with reds, white, blush and specialty wines with their reds being the most popular. “Our wines go through an extensive LCBO testing lab process and the  quality is first rate.”

“On the food side, our specialty is custom “bro” charcuterie boards. We love that our boards are ever-changing, no two the same.  We do a variety of meats and cheeses with a balance of sweetness and savoury.  From our pickling to roasting our almonds to infusing our olive oil with our garlic, we like to surprise our customers with custom-made foods and treats on the board. We have house sauerkraut or varieties from Cultura Ferments and bread made by HOME bakehouse & cafe,” shared Josh. Broers even make their hummus and cheese fondue to add to the board.

After chatting for a while, I mentioned to Josh how immediately cozy and welcoming the wine bar was when I first walked in. He said yes, that’s exactly what we want you to feel! Josh pointed out a plaque on the wall with the word “Gezellig,” a Dutch adjective meaning a feeling of warmth, coziness, family and friendship. Snugly warm and comfortable.

Broers Jansen has done a lot of work to create that feeling with warm wood floors, a barn board wall and handmade wood furniture, made locally. The stone wall with the fireplace was designed and built by a local stone mason. Not to mention the sidewalk patio area out front during the warm months.  “We’re a date night place or a place where friends can come and catch up.”  I can say that the atmosphere reflects its mantra very well!

Broers Jansen is available for booking for small parties and events and their future plans include renovating the back room and changing it into a full market feel and larger event space. “We plan to add more experiences where customers can wander back and take part in wine and whiskey pairings and buy their favourite bottle, along with our in-house made cheeses. We want to have experiential type events where you can learn, relax and enjoy.”

The wine bar also caters, both in-house and for private parties.  In addition, they are available to hire for bar setup and tending. Watch for the “Wobbly Wagon” trailer that will be coming soon!

I remarked to Josh that I noticed some of his videos on Facebook where he’s a bit of an ambassador for other food and community partners in and around the Sault.  “I think we should all be cross-promoting each other. We have so much fantastic diversity in our city.”

Yes, we do Josh, and I look forward to watching your business grow and flourish!
