Ojas is a Sanskrit word meaning “vigour” or “essence of vitality.”  In other words, ojas is the vital energy that rules our immunity, strength and happiness. We all want to have those three things in abundance. This is what the new owners of Ojas-Plant Based have accomplished not only with their plant-based menu but with their revitalization of the former Muio’s in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

I met up with Kumar Bansal, who along with his wife Oyuna Chuluunbazar opened Ojas-Plant Based in April of 2024.  “When we came to the Sault, we had no idea about the history of Muio’s and its place in the food culture here,” said Kumar. “We feel very fortunate to have found this place and this city. Everyone has been so welcoming and kind.”

The couple came to Canada from India and Mongolia in early 2024 and landed in Ottawa. They brought with them over twenty years of experience in the restaurant and hospitality industry. They already own five restaurants in Mongolia. While in Ottawa, they looked for a suitable location to open a restaurant but were unable to find what they wanted.

They started looking in communities in Northern Ontario. First, they looked in Sudbury, then came to Sault Ste. Marie. “Everything fell into place from there,” said Kumar. “The location is a perfect one, then when we went looking for a chef, we were able to find one here in the Sault who has international, 5-star, experience and knows how to prepare plant-based dishes from multiple cuisines. When we arrived, one of our first contact points was with the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce, and are now members. We are also members of Restaurants Canada. When we looked for a marketing team, we hired locally. We believe in supporting local.”

Ojas Restaurant offers a unique type of fusion cuisine. At Ojas, a mix of Asian, Italian, and Indian cuisines results in a creative and dynamic menu. Kumar told me Ojas' menu items are always fresh and 100% plant-based. The dishes are meat and egg free and vegetarian and vegan dishes are also on offer. They also offer gluten- and lactose-free menu items.

The menu consists of soups, salads, appetizers, burgers and sandwiches, with main courses that include pizza, pasta/noodles, along with curries. Desserts and even a kids' menu are offered.

Diners can enjoy dishes like Thai Red Coconut Curry, Butter Chicken, Mushroom Alfredo Quinoa Pasta, Mongolian Noodles, Pepperoni Pizza (made with vegan pepperoni), or a vegan Philly Cheese Sandwich with Fries. How about Fried Pickle Spears, a Beet and Orange Salad, or a hearty bowl of Roasted Lentil Soup? The menu is extensive and varied with something that will please any palate and craving. View the menu for Ojas-Plant Based here.

When you walk into Ojas-Plant Based, you can see and feel the vitality Kumar, Oyuna and their staff have worked hard to bring in. It’s bright, clean and airy. They have done a fantastic job turning the restaurant into a welcoming eatery for their customers.

“Customer satisfaction and serving happiness is what we strive for, “ says Kumar. So far, both locals and visitors are impressed and I wish them every success for continuing their vitality and positive energy in the way they are serving the community.
