On the lake, you can find northern pike, muskie, walleye, yellow perch, bass and panfish, all in one of the most beautiful lakes in Ontario. If you enjoy fishing on the lake, the resort offers forty and fifty-horsepower boat rentals. For those of you who enjoy ice fishing, they have competitive weekend packages which include a heated three-bedroom cottage, and the next morning, they will transport you to one of their spacious propane-heated huts set over some of the most fertile water that the lake has to offer. Some of the most active fish during these times are walleye, northern pike, perch, herring and whitefish.

Our trip to Sandy Bay Cottages was in early June, prime time for post-spawn walleye, aggressively on the feed bag in relatively shallow water between five to twelve feet deep on island points, rocky flats, mid lake shoals and humps. Lake Nipissing has it all when it comes to natural structure for walleye, any time of year.

We decided to fish between a set of islands that featured a bottom contour of sand mixed with all sizes of rocks near the resort, and with a little scouting, we found a school of walleye hovering off bottom directly below our boat. We dropped our jig and minnow presentations and immediately started catching some very thick-bodied Nipissing walleye between sixteen and twenty-plus inches, talk about fun!

We continued to fish similar locations and depths with more walleye up to twenty-five inches and a few thick northern pike mixed with the walleye.

An awesome way to start a mini-vacation to the big lake at this resort located near Callander, Ontario, that offers many perks of a wonderful destination, including gas barbeques, microwaves, satellite television and flat screen TV. They also have a playground for children and gazebos for relaxation, badminton, kayaks and canoes, along with individual fire pits at every cottage.

Experience all that Lake Nipissing and Chalkley’s Sandy Bay Cottage Resort has to offer you.

About Karl Kalonka

It's possible Karl's love for fishing began as early as the age of five. His parents took the kids on weekend trips across Ontario fishing for panfish, catfish, and bass. "I started with a bobber and worm from the time I was five years old," says Karl. These days, he has the enviable task of doing what he loves for a living, travelling across Ontario fishing, filming and producing two outdoor series, Extreme Angler and Crappie Angler TV.
