Decisions, Decisions - Where Should Mike Ride in the Summer of 2013?
For the last four years, I've saddled up my motorcycle and charged into the wilds of Northern Ontario searching for the best time ever - and more importantly, for places I still haven't discovered. Each year I think I'll run out of these places, and each year I seem to find bigger and bigger holes in my knowledge of Ontario motorcycling. With so many areas left unexplored, I feel torn about which one I should explore next. While some of them I've never been to, others I've clearly only scratched the surface of.
So here's my short-list. Tell me which area you'd like to see me explore and report back on this summer. You can e-mail me at mjacobs911@gmail.com, or send me a message on Facebook!
Ontario's Highlands
This wide swath of territory contains the most twists per cubic mile in all of the province, and I've ridden about 1/100th of them. Starting in the west with Haliburton and running all the way to Quebec, there's at lest two solid weeks of non-stop riding here. High on the list are the Calabogie Road, and getting to know every last corner, as well as Highway 64/66, 514, the Shutt Road, and a kabrillion others too numerous to mention here.
Northwest Ontario
Who knew there was life beyond Thunder Bay? Anyone who's ever driven cross country, that's who. Last year we only scratched the surface, but what we saw beneath the opacity of road maps was an area ripe for the discoverin'. For one - Kenora. We did not get to spend nearly enough time there. And then Lake of the Woods - like a less crowded Muskoka. And Kay-Nay-Chi-Wah-Nung. If you don't know, then now you know. But we missed some big roads - didn't get to Armstrong, or Red Lake, or get enough time on St. Joseph Lake. I need a long leisurely trip here, free from the fetters of travel blogging.
Southern Ontario
I know, right? I've never really ridden a motorcycle south of Toronto. It just didn't seem like a thing that was done. But there are some great roads down there, right? And there's tons of stuff to do, right?. And Port Dover too, right? I don't even have a picture...they have gas down there, right?
Greenstone
Last summer we got to spend two days in Greenstone, but it didn't nearly satisfy my curiousity. Sure, we hiked for over an hour to the top of these billion year old cliffs, but somewhere up there is a lake! On the top of the cliff! And we didn't even get to swim in what must be it's Eldorado-like youth restoring waters. Plus, there's Lake Nipigon, and we didn't even get to drive all the way to Nikina!
So tell me - which one would you like to see plastered all over my Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and whatever else is popular in the next three months? Post on my Facebook, or send me an e-mail! I will tally it all up and pick a spot this week!
