A Motorcyclist's Guide to the North Shore of Lake Superior
If you're looking for a motorcycle adventure that blends breathtaking scenery, cultural highlights, and thrilling roads, the north shore of Lake Superior in Ontario, Canada, delivers it all. Over two days, ride from the city of Sault Ste. Marie to Thunder Bay and discover a route packed with natural wonders, iconic landmarks, and delicious stops. Here's what you need to know to make the most of this epic journey along the shores of the world's largest freshwater lake.
FYI, all these highlights are selected for easy access from your motorcycle and are explorable in riding boots and gear.
Day 1: Sault Ste. Marie to Terrace Bay (Approx. 480 km)

Start the Day in Sault Ste. Marie
Your adventure begins in Sault Ste. Marie, where the St. Marys River connects Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Before hitting the road, explore the Soo Locks, an engineering marvel where ships navigate the waterway. As you ride along the streets of Sault Ste. Marie, keep an eye out for the 19 outdoor murals scattered throughout downtown, created by globally renowned and local artists. On a multi-day moto adventure, I enjoy parking my bike as close to my accommodations as possible, aka a motel room and my choice in Sault Ste. Marie is the Catalina Motel.

Batchawana Bay Provincial Park
About 71 km north of Sault Ste. Marie, Batchawana Bay Provincial Park offers a perfect spot to stop and soak in the scenery. The sandy beaches and calm waters of the bay make it a serene rest stop. Take a moment to relax, enjoy a snack, and snap a few photos of this picturesque bay.
Fuel Up at the Voyageur’s Cookhouse

As you continue north, make sure to stop at the iconic Voyageur’s Cookhouse for one of their famous apple fritters. Located just off the highway, this spot is a must-visit for riders needing a quick energy boost. Trust us; the fritters are worth every calorie! Watch the clock; they often sell out by the afternoon.

Old Woman Bay
Next, ride to Old Woman Bay, a breathtaking crescent-shaped beach nestled against towering cliffs. The journey here is half the fun, as this stretch of Highway 17 is one of the most scenic routes in Ontario, offering sweeping views of Lake Superior that make every turn exhilarating. The bay is named after a rock formation resembling an old woman's face. See if you can spot it while taking in the serenity of this majestic location.

Wawa’s Iconic Landmarks
No journey along the north shore is complete without a stop in Wawa. Capture a photo with the iconic Wawa Goose, a colossal roadside attraction that welcomes travellers to this hospitable town. If you favour bears over geese, don't miss the Winnie the Pooh statue in White River. This delightful monument pays tribute to the bear cub that inspired A.A. Milne’s cherished character.
End the Day in Terrace Bay

Arrive in Terrace Bay and settle in for the night at Drifters Motel, a cozy and biker-friendly spot. After checking in, grab a bite to eat at the on-site restaurant, then head to Slate Island Brewing for a refreshing craft beer. If time allows, ride down to Terrace Bay Beach for a peaceful sunset over Lake Superior.
Day 2: Terrace Bay to Thunder Bay (Approx. 300 km)

Aguasabon Falls and Gorge
Kick off Day 2 with a visit to Aguasabon Falls, just minutes from Terrace Bay. This powerful waterfall plunges 30 meters into a rugged gorge and is easily accessible via a short boardwalk. It’s a dramatic way to start your morning and sets the tone for the natural beauty ahead. The short walk to the lookout platform is perfect for moto boots.

Nipigon Bridge and Lookout
As you ride west, you will cross the impressive Nipigon Bridge, Canada's longest cable-stayed bridge. Follow the signs to the Nipigon Lookout Tower for a panoramic view of the surrounding wilderness and the sparkling Nipigon River below—a great spot for a quick break and memorable photos.

Ouimet Canyon
A bit of detour follows a twisty road to Ouimet Canyon, an awe-inspiring natural wonder. The canyon's sheer cliffs drop 100 meters, revealing a unique microclimate that supports rare Arctic-alpine plants. Walk the trails and take in the breathtaking views from the viewing platforms. This is the longest hike on this list, but the walk is easy, and the view is well worth it.

Terry Fox Monument
As you approach Thunder Bay, pay respects to one of Canada’s greatest heroes at the Terry Fox Monument. The site offers breathtaking views of Lake Superior and the Sleeping Giant and a Visitor Information Centre, perfect for a moment of reflection amidst stunning vistas.

Kakabeka Falls
Known as the “Niagara of the North,” Kakabeka Falls is an unmissable stop before reaching Thunder Bay. The 40-meter-high falls cascade in dramatic fashion, and the surrounding trails provide excellent viewpoints. It's a must-see for nature enthusiasts and a great way to stretch your legs before the final stretch of the ride.

End Your Journey in Thunder Bay
Conclude your adventure in Thunder Bay at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Thunder Bay, located on the waterfront. After two days of riding, relax in comfort and enjoy views of the marina. For dinner, explore Thunder Bay’s culinary scene. Whether you’re craving fine dining or a casual bite, the city offers a range of options to satisfy your appetite.
Motorcycling along the north shore of Lake Superior is an unforgettable experience that combines natural beauty, cultural landmarks, and the thrill of the open road. Whether marvelling at waterfalls, sampling local flavours, or admiring sweeping lake views, this two-day journey offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
So, gear up, hit the road, and let the north shore of Lake Superior take your breath away. This is one motorcycle ride you’ll be talking about for years to come.
