Celebrating 15 Years Of Discovery And Interaction: Shadows' Of The Mind Film Festival Showcases Some Of The World's Best Cinema

Experience Cinema from around the world at the 15th annual Shadows of the Mind Film Festival:

February 26th through March 2nd, 2014

Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the Shadows’ of the Mind Film Festival is gearing up to showcase some of the world’s best cinema, right here in Sault Ste. Marie. Shadows is no ordinary film festival. It is a film festival that showcases films and other art forms for two purposes: to entertain and to educate. By attracting audiences through the entertainment value of film, we use select films and events to increase awareness and education on mental health and addiction issues, as well as other prevalent social topics as decided each year.

Shadows of the Mind

Attending Shadow’s can be an experience of discovery and interaction. Join in on panel discussions where you have the opportunity to share your thoughts and excitement with filmmakers during question-and-answer sessions after screenings. This year we will have filmmaker Andrèe Cazabon join us with her documentary, 3RD World Canada, and two of the stars of the Locally filmed feature FOXFIRE.

A key part of the film selection process is having members of the festival committee attend festivals in Toronto, Sudbury and Michigan, previewing and choosing from ‘the best of the best’. Shadows will be screening 24 films from six countries, including 6 Films with 16 Academy Award Nominations. Our highly anticipated films include Dallas Buyer’s Club, Nebraska, and Blue Jasmine. The festival promises to have something for everyone, including documentaries, comedies, drama and the children‘s feature: The Secret of Kells. Many of these Oscar-worthy films will not show up in northern commercial theaters, making it even more important that our film festival make these available.

The Shadows Art Show also features artwork by people with lived experience of mental illness which aims to provide education on the healing power of art therapy.

Formed 15 years ago by a group of film lovers from various mental health, addictions, and social service organizations, Shadows is now a non-profit organization that proudly hosts a festival that stimulates discussion and that has entertained well over 30,000 patrons. Powered by volunteers, Shadows has evolved into a popular and anticipated event with a broad and diverse audience, attracting people from Sudbury, Algoma District and Northern Michigan.
