Catch Big Walleye on Perrault Lake
There are trophy-class fisheries across Ontario for everything from walleye, lake trout, muskie, crappie, pike, bass, etc. Most of us love to fish for whatever bites the end of our line, but we all have our favourite species that trips our fishing trigger more than any other. Personally, the big ol’ marble-eyed, white-tip walleye stands on top of that list. I’ve fished walleyes more than all the other species combined in Ontario, searching for trophy-class walleye.
Ontario is home to more walleye lakes and more lakes that hold trophy-sized walleyes than any region in North America. I have fished numerous lakes in the Sunset Country region of Ontario because of the trophy walleye fishing opportunities available there, making this an area I return to year after year
Manotak Lodge is nestled on the shores of Perrault Lake in the heart of Sunset Country, Ontario, just a short drive north of the U.S. and Canadian border. It is a family-owned and operated four-star fishing lodge. It offers fantastic meals and friendly service with sixteen modern cabins that accommodate two to twelve guests with Housekeeping or American Plan options.
At Manotak Lodge, you start your day with a tasty breakfast at the main lodge and then head out for a day of action-packed fishing. You can take a break for a fresh-caught mid-day walleye shore lunch with potatoes and beans. If you would rather stay on the water, they will pack you a bag lunch for a quick on-the-water refuel.
In the evening, after a great day of fishing, you return to the lodge and are met by a dockhand who helps with docking, refuelling your boat with gas, fishing cleaning, and getting any gear back to your cabin. In the evenings, you relax and freshen up at your cabin before heading to the main lodge for a delicious salad bar and cuisine dinner.
Manotak Lodge offers extremely comfortable 18-foot Lund and Alumarine boats with 50-hp 4-stroke Yamaha motors, depth finders, and live wells at no cost. If you would rather bring your own boat, their facility includes an on-site boat launch. Docking is available, and a dockhand is on duty to help with your every need.
This is one of those destinations that gives you a great chance at your personal best every time you drop your line. Perrault holds big fish opportunities for multiple species, including walleye. I’ve visited Manotak Lodge several times, and each visit has shown me why I returned. I have boated multiple high 20” walleyes, with the tail sniffing that 30” mark on many occasions. The walleye fishing is lights out all season long and is one of those amazing lakes that allow you to fish them with many different techniques, from jigs with soft plastics or minnows, live bait rigs, Jigging Raps, crankbaits, drop shots and more, all dependent on the water temp and time of year.
My favorite time to fish for big walleyes is during that mid-summer to fall transition time when the walleyes have their feed bag on, and the reaction bite is at its peak. Those big, heavy walleyes tend to show themselves more frequently, increasing your odds for a fish of a lifetime! This is a great time to pull bottom bouncers with spinners and crawler harnesses. Ripping Rapala’s #5 or #7 Jigging Rap also shines during this time frame. A two-prong approach of pulling bouncers to find the schools with bigger fish, then shifting to Jigging Raps, is very efficient and effective to close the deal on more big fish, in my experience.
Perrault Lake consists of 9,500 acres with over 50 miles of shoreline and is attached to Cedar Lake, which offers an additional 9,500 acres and 67 miles of lakeshore. Together, they provide fantastic multi-species action for Walleye, Pike, Smallmouth Bass, Muskie, Perch and Whitefish, with numerous islands, weed beds, and mid-lake and shoreline structures to fish.
If big walleyes, musky, pike or smallmouth trips are your trigger, plus add the extremely friendly staff, great food and comfortable accommodations with impeccable service, then your next call needs to be to the Swafford family at Manotak Lodge for a trip you will never forget!
