Catching Giant Bass on the Seine River Chain in Ontario

American influencer and angler Krysten Potega ventures north on her first trip to Canada—and can't believe the size of the bass up here! Learn more about her visit to Branch's Seine River Lodge on Banning Lake, part of the Seine River Chain.

Ontario Smallmouth Paradise

Nestled in the heart of Sunset Country, Branch's Seine River Lodge is a fisherman's dream come true. This family-owned and operated lodge has been a staple in the area since 1967, offering anglers an unparalleled experience pursuing trophy smallmouth bass and other species. The lodge boasts a rich history, with generations of the Branch family sharing their passion for the outdoors with guests. Situated on Banning Lake, it is a central hub to explore the expansive Seine River Chain of Lakes. We were lucky to get to know Quent and Lori Branch, the owners of Branch’s Seine River Lodge. Quent and Lori embodied Canadian Nice, making sure our stay with them was nothing short of perfect!

Modern Comfort in a Wilderness Setting

While Branch's Seine River Lodge is immersed in nature, it doesn't sacrifice modern comforts. The lodge features newly renovated cabins equipped with satellite TV, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and stunning lake views. This is the absolute perfect lodge for a family getaway, with the creature comforts of home while still being enveloped in the Canadian Outdoors. Whether you prefer a housekeeping or an all-inclusive American plan package, you're guaranteed a comfortable stay.

Dessert at Seine River Lodge

If I were to recommend anything, I would opt for the American Plan.  The meals at Branch’s were comparable to high-end Supper Clubs here in Wisconsin, and some of the highlights of our day was waiting to see what meals were being prepared for the evening.  Honestly, I was waiting for Gordon Ramsey to pop out of the kitchen because the meals were that delicious!

While at Branch’s lodge, check out the beers made by Lori Branch, aptly named Quetico Brewing Co. Quetico Brewing Co is more than just a brewery; it's an integral part of the Branch's Seine River Lodge experience. The next time you're planning a fishing trip or getaway to Sunset Country, be sure to include a visit to this unique lodge and indulge in some of the craft beer on site! My recommendation would be the Lily Dipper!

Recommended Lures

We were lucky enough to get into some of the big Smallmouth that Branch’s is known for. After narrowing it down, our top 3 lures of the trip were:

  1. Berkley Choppo (Color Bone-105mm): This lure excelled when smallmouth were aggressively feeding on surface baitfish. Watch for surface activity, cast the lure quickly, and prepare for chaos!
  2. Ned Rig: A perfect choice for more cautious fish, we used a 1/8 to 1/4 ned head rigged with a Z-Man Hula Sticks or Z-Man Finesse TRD to catch numerous fish. This is how I landed a new personal best smallmouth at 21 inches.
  3. Jerkbait: The Berkley Stunna 112 and KVD Deep Jerkbait (clown Color) also proved effective.

Big Walleye and Northern Pike, Too!

Beyond smallmouth bass, the lodge also offers excellent fishing opportunities for walleye and northern pike. With over 30 miles of interconnected lakes and varied structures, there's something for every angler. You won't regret going to the Branch's Seine River Lodge.
