There's more than just fishing in the Red Lake Region

Spectacular beaches, the most northerly 18-hole golf course and the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre are just a few of the bonuses of your trip up Highway 105.

The Red Lake Region is a great place for taking your family fishing. Whether you choose the Lac Seul, English River or Red Lake area lakes, you won't be disappointed. There are numerous drive-in or fly-in lodges and resorts in the area that can accommodate all your needs. But, there's more than just fishing in the area. There's two golf courses, shopping, beaches, canoeing and a first class Heritage Centre.

Lots to See and Do in Red Lake

Be sure to stop by the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre to learn about Red Lake's mining, aviation and First Nations heritage. The updates to this museum in the last few years have been phenomenal. There are plenty of multimedia displays and new exhibits.

Visit the chip truck and take your lunch to the Norseman Heritage Park where you can watch float planes take off. If golf is your game, be sure to book your tee time at the Red Lake Golf & Country Club. It is the most northerly 18-hole golf course in Ontario. It features a driving range, putting green, and a full-service clubhouse with a licensed restaurant, patio, pro-shop and club and cart rental facilities.

Red Lake also has a Skateboard park right next to the ball diamonds and Centennial Park. Cool off at Rahill or Kinsmen Beach on those hot summer days. In the winter, head over to McKenzie Island and go cross country skiing on their trails.

Ear Falls Activities

In the Ear Falls area, be sure to visit the Waterfront Park. Here you will find the Patricia (a freight boat that was built in the 1930s and has been fully restored.), a volleyball net and a beach with a swimming dock. Bring a picnic and enjoy the day on the shores of Lac Seul or under the covered picnic shelter. This is also the location of the annual Trout Forest Music Festival.

Just up the road from the Waterfront Park, you can get out and walk around to see a few roadside exhibits including a Beech 18A, a Nike-Cajun Display Rocket, and a few old machinery pieces from the Griffith Mine. Carved from the northern Boreal forest of spruce and pine, rolling lined fairways and natural water hazards combine to create a truly northern golf experience at the Ear Falls Golf & Country Club. The course also features a full-service clubhouse with restaurant, deck, driving range, putting green, club and cart rentals and a pro-shop.

Ontario Provincial Parks in the area

Woodland Caribou Provincial Park is a remote wilderness park west of Red Lake that many canoeists strive to paddle at least once in their lifetime. A float plane will fly you and your canoe into the park and drop you off for a paddling adventure whether it be for a few days or weeks. Contact these canoe outfitters in Red Lake who help you plan the canoeing trip of your dreams.

Pakwash Provincial Park is located 19 kms north of Ear Falls just off Highway 105. This drive-to park has tent camping as well as spots for RV and campers. There is a large flat grassy area that is great for large get-togethers or children's games. The sandy beach and the lake's shallow, warm water are ideal for swimming, fishing and canoeing.

You can plan your activities before you get here, or take it day by day once you arrive. No matter what you decide, your vacation in the Red Lake Region will be a memorable one. Visit the Highway 105 Tourism & Marketing Board's website to see what awaits you or visit the Ontario's Sunset Country website to link to businesses in Red Lake or Ear Falls.
