"Our mission, as the Algoma Arts Festival Association, is to enhance life for the people of our northern community by bringing to them the experience of excellence in the visual and performing arts.

The Algoma Arts Festival Association is the presenter of the Algoma Fall Festival, a multi-disciplinary arts celebration held each year in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada in October. The Festival maintains a range of programming that includes music, theatre, dance and the visual arts. The Association also delivers the Festival of Learning; an extensive arts outreach and education program. The Association was incorporated in 1972 and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2012. The Algoma Fall Festival wishes to engage the community on a variety of levels. An exhibition of paintings by members of the Group of Seven is paired with contemporary artist George Walker's Mysterious Death of Tom Thomson.

The Group of Seven show will feature original paintings borrowed from local collections and select art institutions.

While George Walker's The Mysterious Death of Tom Thomson will tell a story in over 100 wood engravings.

Together, both exhibitions show the stunning artistic beauty of Northern Ontario's rugged landscape and the how the Group's paintings, their lives and deaths continue to inspire one of Canada's leading living artists and printmakers.

Northern Ontario's first Nuit Blanche will feature a self guided tour of contemporary visual art projects and installations along Queen and Bay St. Guided by the original principles of the first Nuit Blanche this event will be free to attend and go deep into the night. Focused on the theme: The Great Lake Superior participants can expect the unexpected when natural wonders "appear" in this downtown urban setting.

So stay out late and experience a new vision revealed through the contemporary art projects and installations of creative and talented Canadian artists. This event runs throughout the night, rain or shine.

To have a "Nuit Blanche" means to "Have a Sleepless Night". The first Nuit Blanche took place in Paris France in 2002 and went all night long. Featuring all manner of artistic expressions and projects, it brought many tourists and visitors to Paris. Since then, Nuit Blanche events have spread across the world including Paris, Rome, Madrid, Toronto, and now Sault Ste. Marie. These events attract millions of visitors, art lovers and curiosity seekers and have become a cultural phenomenon.

Who were the Group of Seven and why did they paint in the style they did? Come and participate in a lively discussion with art historians and curators and experts as they re-examine the lives and times of this extraordinary painting movement and its artists who found enduring images of the Canadian nation in the landscape of northern Ontario, particularly in and around Sault Ste. Marie. The speakers will pose questions relating to the originality of their styles, their relationships to modern painting in Europe in the early twentieth century, their lives and loves during a time of great upheaval following the First World War. Their answers are sure to startle and surprise, while giving new insight into their contributions to the development of Canadian art and the formation of a national identity.

Speakers:

Ross King is the bestselling author of six books on Italian, French and Canadian art and history. One of these books Defiant Spirits: The Modernist Revolution of the Group of Seven, traces the artistic development of the future members of the Group of Seven and Tom Thomson over a dozen years in Canadian history.

Nancy Lang is a producer and researcher for White Pine Pictures, and is currently producing Spirit Land: In Search of the Group of Seven, a documentary that weaves through the history of the Group in Algoma and The North Shore. Lang is a graduate of The University of Toronto and Ontario College of Art. She painted and exhibited for 15 years.

Tom Smart, is an award-winning author, Deputy Director and Curator of the Art Gallery of Sudbury, and former CEO of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, where he presented exhibitions and programs, such as Defiant Spirits and In the Footsteps of the Group of Seven, that re-interpreted the contributions of the Group of Seven and the way we view the landscapes that they painted today.

The Beaton Family of Mabou

The Beaton Family is a traditional music group from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, highly noted for their lively, energetic fiddle playing and dancing. Their musical heritage is rich and has been passed down through generations of pipers, fiddlers and dancers from the Western Isles of Scotland to the Island of Cape Breton. The band features husband and wife Kinnon Beaton and Betty (MacMaster) Beaton, their daughter Andrea Beaton and nephews Rodney MacDonald and Glenn Graham all from the extended family of Donald Angus and Elizabeth Beaton of Mabou. Individually they have their own musical careers, and are composers, constantly adding to the repertoire of their homeland. Together, they are a tightly knit, dynamic bunch, and great ambassadors for their beloved Cape Breton Island.
