Head South this Summer
You don’t need to cross the border to experience a trip down south. History, food, and adventure can be found right here in our own back yard.
Visit Stanley
Ride or drive 26 km west of Thunder Bay on Hwy 11/17 to Hwy 588. Turn south and travel 1 km to Stanley.
The community was named for Lord Stanley, who is also recognized for the famous hockey trophy. But at the Stanley Tavern, people come for the Stanley Burger.
Bring a friend – you won’t be able to eat it all on your own.
Discover the Historic Peedee
Continue 14 km south on Hwy 588 and turn north on Hwy 595 for 1 km into Hymers. There you’ll find the PeeDee Park and plaque to commemorate the history of the Port Arthur Duluth and Western Railway.
Golf!
Back on Hwy 588, travel southwest for 9 km to Nolalu, named for the saw mill: NOrth LAnd LUmber. Here’s where your friend will come in handy again as they hold your score card while you play golf on St. Urho’s Golf Course at Hopper’s Variety. If golf isn’t your style, try the disc golf object course.
get muddy
Another 9 km down the road is Silver Mountain. There, you can enjoy a prime rib roast in the beautifully restored Silver Mountain Station, or get down and dirty on the ATV trails.
Stephy Maki took to the trails, “Let me tell you, you don't realize how beautiful your home land is until you actually go deep inside! Nothing will ever beat the thrill and spectacular scene you get while riding under a canopy of trees and stirring up mud.”
