WWII Bombers to Touch Down in Thunder Bay

How often do you get the chance to re-live history, imagining yourself as part of a flight crew heading into the fray of World War II?

Beginning Monday, August 1, The Commemorative Air Force of the United States will have two historic warbirds at the Confederation College Aviation Centre of Excellence (ACE) on the Thunder Bay International Airport grounds, setting up for a week of ground tours, interactive displays and the incredible opportunity to take a ride on one of the magnificent planes.

Sentimental Journey is a fully-restored Boeing B-17G heavy bomber, dubbed “the Flying Fortress” due to its sheer size and artillery power. One of the most iconic bombers of WWII, Sentimental Journey is one of only 10 of its kind worldwide that is still airworthy.

Miss Mitchell – Maid in the Shade is a North American B-25 medium bomber. The B-25 Mitchell was used throughout the Second World War for tactical bombing, tank busting and anti-shipping strikes.

The planes will be on the tarmac for tours until Sunday, August 7. Gate fee is $10.

On the weekend both planes are available for flight tours, which include about 25 minutes of “in-air” time. Flights are a bit pricey (from $395 - $850 USD) but for such a unique bucket-list item, definitely worth it. This great event is hosted by the Northwestern Ontario Aviation Heritage Centre, Confederation College and the Thunder Bay International Airport in partnership with the Commemorative Air Force of the United States.
