Getting Your New ATV Certification: Ontario Regulations

In Ontario, before any trips get planned, all new ATV drivers must follow specific license and certification regulations. All riders must be at least 12 years old to operate an ATV on public land unless directly supervised, and all riders must complete an approved ATV safety course if under 16. Equipment such as helmets are mandatory, and liability insurance is required on every machine. There may also be additional municipal bylaws that apply, so research the region you will be vacationing in before you leave.

ATV Requirements in Ontario

Meeting ATV requirements ensures rider safety on the trails.

New riders also be aware that your ATV must be less than 1.35 meters wide and must weigh 450 kg or less. Your ATV should have low-pressure bearing tires, be registered, display a rear license plate and possess insurance under an Ontario motor vehicle policy. All ATVs need also meet the motor vehicle safety standards prescribed for off-road use in the Motor Vehicle Safety Act and be equipped with an appropriate service brake and a brake light on the rear of the vehicle.

Greenhorn Driver Training: Take an ATV Rider Education Course

As with automobile drivers, new ATV riders are advised to take safety courses to learn proper riding techniques, environmental responsibility, and regulations. The Canada Safety Council (CSC) ATV Rider Course is a great option, providing hands-on training with certified instructors. Some course material focuses on youth riders, ensuring they develop safe habits early while other training caters to new riders of all ages. Such training as maneuvering, braking, and emergency procedures on ATV are covered. Many local ATV clubs also offer rider education programs.

Standard CSC Course

The first ATV Riders course offered by CSC is an 8-hour training program operated by certified CSC instructors. The curriculum is based on proven field-tested techniques, providing engaging ways to learn proper ATV operation. New riders will learn about controls, reading terrain, turning and ascending hills.

Under Age 14 Course

A separate ATV Course is available for riders under age 14 whose parents specifically permit them to ride ATV. The vehicle must be the proper size for the child as per ATV industry safety standards. A signed consent form is required in Ontario from the parent or legal guardian. If your child is between 6 and 11 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must be present at the training site.

Packing Tips for a Northern Ontario ATV Trip: Travelling North with Newbies

When ATVing with new riders, being properly prepared can make or break a trip.

When I started ATV riding with my daughters for the first time, I made sure to pack things like a first-aid kit, tow straps, and tire repair kit for emergencies. Also, a good idea is an air pump and extra fuel just in case. I always have my cell phone, handheld GPS and SPOT satellite phone when travelling way off-grid. I pack plenty of water, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing, as well as a toolkit with basic equipment. My daughters call me ‘Mr. Gadget’ because of all my gear, but better safe than sorry is my motto.

Congrats to All First-Time ATV Riders

I will never forget my first time ATVing during a spring vacation with my father near Mattawa. The thrill of cruising these northern trails was something I never forgot. It transformed me into an off-roader for life, and I wish the same future for you!

Happy riding and I will see y’all on the trails!
