Whether you’re chasing adventure or tranquillity, these 12 must-stop spots will make your ride unforgettable.
1. Aubrey Falls
Located off Highway 129, Aubrey Falls is a hidden gem that showcases Northern Ontario’s natural beauty. A short hike from the parking area leads you to a cascading waterfall framed by lush forests. This is the perfect place to stretch your legs, take photos, and soak in the serenity. Around 100 kilometres north of Highway 17 along Highway 129, keep an eye out for the Aubrey Falls sign, which is easily missed. The access road is dirt and can be affected by environmental conditions, so if you are on a big touring bike, maybe look before committing.
2. Blackcreek Outfitters
Marking the northern end of the twisty section of Highway 129, referred to as the “Tail Of the Dragon North,” a stop at Blackcreek Outfitters in Thessalon is a great way to recharge. Known for its local gear and supplies, this spot is also an excellent place to gather advice or grab snacks for the journey ahead. The warm hospitality adds to the experience. 3. Engine 5433
This historic locomotive in Chapleau is a tribute to the area’s railway heritage. Perfect for history buffs, Engine 5433 offers a glimpse into the railway’s vital role in developing Northern Ontario. The site is also a fun photo op for riders. Chapleau also makes a great spot to refuel the machine and the body.
4. Potholes Provincial Nature Reserve
Just off Highway 101, at Potholes Provincial Nature Reserve, you can find fascinating geological formations carved by rushing waters over millennia. Walk the trails and marvel at these unique natural wonders, which starkly contrast with the rugged surroundings. No cost, lots of parking and a short walk doable in motorcycle boots make this a good stop to stretch your legs.
5. Dr. Rose's Beach
Stretch your legs with a stroll along Dr. Rose's Beach at Wawa Lake. The sandy shoreline offers incredible views of Wawa Lake and its surrounding landscape. Follow the Lion's Beachfront Heritage Walk to a fascinating display of the town’s historic past as a centre for mining iron ore. This stop is incredibly picturesque during sunset.
6. The Wawa Goose
No trip to Wawa is complete without a visit to the iconic Wawa Goose statue. Standing proudly at the town's entrance, this massive monument symbolizes the community’s heritage and is an excellent place for a photo.
7. Old Woman Bay
Continuing along Lake Superior, Old Woman Bay is a breathtaking stop with towering cliffs and crystal-clear waters. Motorcyclists love this place for its serene atmosphere and stunning vistas. Take a break, dip your toes in the water, or enjoy the scenic views. The view from the west as you approach Old Woman Bay is why I always ride the Grand Algoma Tour counterclockwise.
8. The Voyageurs' Lodge and Cookhouse
Situated in Batchawana Bay, the Voyageurs' Lodge and Cookhouse is renowned for its hearty meals, local charm, and famous apple fritters. Riders rave about the delicious food, making it a must-visit spot for a satisfying lunch. The nearby gift shop is also worth a visit for souvenirs.
9. Soo Locks
The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie are a marvel of engineering and a gateway to the Great Lakes. Watching boats pass through the locks is a mesmerizing experience. Nearby, you’ll find restaurants and shops to round out your visit. Also, keep an eye out for the many street murals as you make your way through Sault Ste. Marie.
10. The Echo Bay Loonie Statue
While the Grand Algoma Tour officially follows Highway 17 east, taking the minor detour along Highway 17B will let you pay homage to Canada’s iconic currency at the Loonie Statue in Echo Bay. This unique monument honours artist Robert-Ralph Carmichael, who designed the loon featured on the coin. It’s a quirky yet charming addition to your tour.
11. Bruce Mines
Bruce Mines, Ontario is a quaint town with a rich mining history. Stroll through the historic downtown, discover a Group of Seven monument at the marina, visit the Bruce Mines Museum, or enjoy the local charm. This is also a great spot to grab lunch at Bobbers Restaurant, a coffee at The Copper Bean Cafe or ice cream at Red House Ice Cream before hitting the road again.

Stop at Lakeside Beach, Thessalon, to finish your journey. This peaceful spot offers stunning views of Lake Huron and a chance to reflect on the incredible journey you’ve just completed. It’s also the perfect place to watch the sunset before heading home.
