It was a few years since I was last at the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre. I visited the museum this summer and all I can say is "WOW". It was great the last time I was there, but they've added some interactive displays that are really fantastic. If you've never been there, you must make time next time you are in Red Lake.

As you first walk into the beautiful building you'll go through the lobby that houses a rotating exhibit to the right as well as many historic banners and the Donor Wall on the left. Help yourself to Red Lake tourist information near the front desk. Before entering the museum you'll go through the Cheeky Beaver Boutique. This gift shop carries a variety of items including clothing, books & DVDs, travel mugs, Woodland Art and historic photographs. If you don't get a chance to buy something, you can also phone in orders by calling 807-727-3006. The Heritage Centre has their stock online.

Mining Stories told in a multi media exhibit — Discover Red Lake’s gold mining history through the eyes of Cliff Harvey

As you enter the doors to the museum, you'll find both static and interactive displays on Aboriginal history, gold mining, the fur trade, immigration and more. There's an art wall, and static displays such as a Fur Trade Post, Immigration Story, Dentist Office and Barber Shop. In the centre of the room, you'll find Fairwind's Drum, an interactive display. Hell's Acres and Mining Stories exhibits are multi-media experiences using technology to help you relive the past.

Aviation is a real big part of Red Lake's history. There is a huge high definition movie screen which airs an aviation show. Sit back and enjoy the show! There is also another exhibit hall that has rotating exhibits. Check out the Red Lake Regional Heritage Centre for information on these current and upcoming exhibits.
