Incredible Fishing at Dog Lake Resort in Northern Ontario

Dog Lake Resort, nestled in the heart of Superior Country's stunning wilderness, is a fisherman's paradise for walleye and smallmouth bass.

What an incredible fishing adventure this turned out to be! Dog Lake Resort, nestled in the heart of Superior Country's stunning wilderness, is a fisherman's paradise for walleye and smallmouth bass. With over 500 miles of shoreline made up of bays, islands, and reefs, there's so much to explore and fish. Fed by both the Dog River and East River systems, this remarkable fishery creates the perfect environment for trophy walleye and some exciting smallmouth bass fishing too.

Dog Lake Resort Bayview Deck

Their spacious Bayview cabin was our home for this adventure. It offers fantastic sunsets from the deck overlooking the bay. Traveling in a big group? There's enough space for up to 12 people. The comfortable layout features two bedrooms (each with double and bunk beds) plus a loft with four double beds. It's fully equipped with a complete bathroom, kitchen, and a private deck with gas grill and lawn chairs for outdoor relaxation. There are also several lakeside cabins available just steps away from the dock.

Let's talk about the fishing - because that's what Dog Lake is legendary for! While the lake holds multiple species, including northern pike, whitefish, and yellow perch, it's the walleye fishing that steals the show. The majority of guests visit targeting walleye, and for good reason. We jumped in the boat with longtime guest Jim Schafhauser and had a great time catching fish right away! If you happen to visit when he's staying, ask about the current bite - he knows the lake from top to bottom. The highlight of my trip came on day two when I caught a 28-incher on a Rapala X-Rap. We had so many fish for the show that Logan DeCent, who was filming, put down the big camera and got in some casts. He caught a picture-perfect 26-incher!

Smallmouth bass are my favorite to catch, and Dog Lake did not disappoint! The bass start at 18 inches and grow bigger from there. Each one we caught was a football. Bring your topwater baits! The Rapala Jowler and Skitter Prop triggered the biggest bites. When you consider the current lake record stands at 6 pounds 3 ounces, you understand why this fishery has earned its reputation.

While many guests (about 60%) bring their own boats, we used their big 21' Lund Predator. It has plenty of room inside and is perfect for fishing 2-3 people. If you do bring your own boat, the docks are equipped with power to keep batteries charged.
