Featuring - Café Natüra
Kelly Burton, Nutritional Consultant at Café Natüra shares her passion for healing and the story of how Café Natüra came to be.
Growing up, I always wanted to open a Politics Store. It would be a café with books that promote positive change. It would be a place where people talked about health and society, geopolitics and the environment. It would be filled with people who believed that civic duties were a part of our responsibilities as humans and we would together, be up for the task.
Many of my friends laughed at how boring and idealistic this sounded.
Seven years ago, my Naturopath Dr. Todd Carricato, brought me over to the space now known as Café Natüra. He wanted to do something with the space attached to the Elgin Integral Health Centre and thought with our similar views on health and nutrition, we could make a good team. He found us a third partner and away we went creating a business plan and designing our special space.
We opened our doors in August 2008. We serve smoothies, herbal teas, organic fair trade coffee, fresh baking, breakfast, lunch, supplements and self-care products. We get excited about accommodating dietary requirements; including, gluten free and vegan diets. We also offer great catering services.
Our business has evolved over the years, but our commitment to organic fair trade coffee has not waivered. We carry coffee roasted on St. Joe's Island by Shane and Heather Hoffman, as well as Equator Coffee Roasters in Almonte, right outside my hometown of Arnprior. We have an assortment of herbal and organic teas, and love picking them out for you. The last few years have seen the emergence of an amazing culture within Café Natüra and Sault Ste Marie as a community. Monthly art shows by artists have enabled exposure of paintings and photography from hundreds of locals. The Sault Indigenous Writers Collective has held some really interesting events here, involving some really talented peeps. Jackson Reed, a very young, bright and talented music promoter, created live at Café Natüra – a series of affordable all ages music shows. Public response has been such good times. Live, original, music... Not much better than that.
And then came the Mill Farmers Market and Mill Flea Market. Café Natüra jumped on board when approached about vending at this fantastic venue. It is a hub of everything we love. Whole food, music, hand crafts and people socializing. Here, we sell coffee by the bag or cup, Iced Coffee, Herbal Teas – hot or iced, fresh baking, special of the day, soup, and other random things that we think are cool. On Sunday's, I get to carouse the used book booth and look for my longed for political masterworks.
Come visit us in the café or our booth at the market, for a drink or some food, or perhaps a chit chat about your diet, the world, or life in general. If I am lucky, we may even have the odd discussion about politics. There is no ingenuity gap here. It is not a politics store, per say, but we do foster positive change, nutrient dense eating, enjoyment of art, music, community involvement. We support our local economy and talent. We grow some of our own food. We buy from local farmers. And we are not alone. There are so many social activist in Sault Ste Marie. There are so many do'ers and shakers. There is so much ingenuity. Come to Café Natüra and you will probably meet someone special.
