Autumn Adventures You’ll Fall in Love with in The Seven

Whether you like glamping, hiking, ATVing or unique spas, here are seven spots offering promotions to help you make the most of those gorgeous Northeastern Ontario fall days.

Fall in Northeastern Ontario has a lot going for it. There are the vibrant leaf colours, of course, but also all that natural beauty wrapped up in cool temperatures, endless blue skies (or lively storms and moody clouds) and fun promotions from a variety of venues.

Here are seven of our favourite autumn adventures in The Seven—Northeastern Ontario for 2024.

1. Otter Pointe Camping in Calvin

If you’re looking for a range of accommodations in a beautiful boreal setting, Otter Pointe Camping is an excellent choice. Located on Pimisi Bay off the Mattawa River, easily reached via Hwy 17, this resort offers a newly renovated cottage, four tent camping sites, two glamping domes, and a new cabin opening this fall. Guests can use the on-site boats, canoes, kayaks and pop-up docks, and the new peanut/nut-free Otterly Delicious Bakery is open on the property this fall. Don’t miss their fun fall promotion! Anyone who books via their website with at least five days’ notice between September 1 and November 30 for two nights or longer will receive a free 7-inch pie of their choice, based on available flavours. Yum!

2. Cedar Meadows Resort & Spa in Timmins

Is self-care on the list for fall? Check! Cedar Meadows Resort & Spa is found on 175 rugged acres and features 49 rooms and suites plus five chalets. On-site amenities include a dining room featuring contemporary Canadian cuisine and daily wildlife tours in their private wildlife park, where you might spot bison, fallow deer or elk. Spa Grande Nature offers appealing luxury treatments, including Nordic baths that alternate hot and cold plunges, as well as massages, manicures, facials, infrared sauna and other aesthetic goodies. Spa packages are available too.

For a truly unforgettable wilderness experience that’s unique in North America, consider the Sleeping with the Wolves package. The 11 resort wolves—Raven, Bear, Sable and the rest of the pack—have traded their zoo life for 10 acres of natural habitat at Cedar Meadows, and you can observe them from a safe distance when you book a premium “glass chalet” (read: lots of windows for wildlife viewing).

Check out the Cedar Meadows website for more information.

3. Smoothwater Outfitters in Temagami

If you opt for a day trip, that means you can explore the gorgeous natural beauty of the area and then head back to your comfy accommodations at their lodge for a home-cooked meal featuring wild ingredients, traditional knowledge and fresh local fare, plus amenities that include a sauna. Choose from a half-dozen outings, including the Caribou Mountain Fire Tower climb, where you take a short trail to the authentic, fully-restored tower and climb 30m to get a breathtaking panoramic view of the fall colours and rippling lakes.

VMUTS is an exceptional playground for ATV, 4x4, dirt bike and mountain bike lovers. Comprised of old logging roads surrounded by forest, it’s tucked between the Algonquin Highlands and Laurentian Mountains and bordered by the Ottawa and Mattawa Rivers, with all the logs, dirt, creeks, rocks and hills you could want. One fall highlight is the 25th anniversary of OFATV, and a Fall Rally that features a Night Run on September 20 and then a Fall Poker Run on September 21. Check out Mattawa Adventure Camp as your home base that includes both well-equipped cottages and hotel rooms, or a range of package options. And don't miss the best Thai food in the North at Le Voyageur Inn!

Groomed trails, varied terrain and vibrant fall foliage make North Bay an unforgettable mountain biking experience. One example is the Three Towers Trail which boasts 13 km of winding trails that work nicely for mountain bikers of all ages and skill levels. Be sure to take advantage of North Bay’s waterfront location on Lake Nipissing, with small-city charm, craft breweries, and delicious local eateries too.

Science North has great interactive exhibits and special events for all ages, making it a perfect fall destination for both families and adults looking for something fun and interesting. The famous Halloween at Dynamic Earth runs from September 27 to October 27 every Friday to Sunday evening, with highlights like the 7,000 themed pumpkins of Pumpkinferno, the Bug Café, a spooky scavenger hunt and “creepy” science shows. The venue’s adult Nightlife Series kicks off in September with a Boots, Buckles and Beers country theme, followed by a second event in November, which is a murder mystery. The Pink Floyd Planetarium show is another popular weekend event, highlighting spectacular music, surround sound and visuals on the 8.4-metre dome screen. Watch their social media and website for other exciting announcements about upcoming IMAX movie showings too.

From hiking, biking, ATVing and fishing to glamping, spa treatments, wildlife and science, fall in The Seven truly offers something for everyone, Northern Ontario-style. Get inspired to add one—or all seven!—of these fall adventures to your plans this autumn.
