Kapuskasing: A Cultural Mosaic

Our adventure begins in Kapuskasing, a town known for its rich cultural diversity. The Kapuskasing Museum & Ron Morel Memorial Museum offers a glimpse into the local history and heritage. For a unique experience, visit Riverside Park, where you can relax in hammocks and enjoy the serene surroundings.

Cochrane: Gateway to the North

For a taste of adventure, explore the extensive network of ATV and snowmobile trails that wind through the surrounding forests. Find a Blend of History and Nature in Iroquois Falls 

A short drive east brings us to Iroquois Falls, a town that beautifully combines industrial history with natural attractions. Visit the Iroquois Falls Pioneer Museum to delve into the area's past, or head to Kettle Lakes Provincial Park, about a 40-minute drive southwest of Iroquois Falls, home to 22 deep, spring-fed kettle lakes that were formed by glaciers. The park has four different hiking trails ranging in difficulty from easy to moderate to help you explore the boreal pine forest and take in some good bird-watching, too.

Tiny But Mighty Val Gagné

Val Gagné may be small, but it’s packed with rural charm and a lot of history. Once a thriving railway settlement called Nushka, Val Gagné was devastated by the Great Fire of 1916—one of the deadliest in Canadian History—which consumed the town and took the lives of its priest, Wilfrid Gagné, and many residents. Rebuilt and renamed in his honor, this rural community remains a testament to resilience, its past woven into local history and commemorated with a monument in its cemetery.

Black-River Matheson: A Hidden Gem

Black-River Matheson is a great stop for nature lovers and history buffs alike. Nearby Abitibi-De-Troyes Provincial Park is a scenic spot perfect for fishing, canoeing, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings. In the winter, the area is a hotspot for snowmobiling, with well-groomed trails connecting to Ontario’s larger trail network. For a glimpse into local history, check out the Thelma Miles Historical Museum, which tells the history of the community and the devastating 1916 fire that shaped the town.
