Built on the beautiful backdrop of Northern Ontario, these courses provide unique experiences for the seasoned pro to the casual player. Here is all you need to know about Nickel City’s notable golf courses, including nearby dining options and where you can get your next set of clubs, shoes, outfits, and more.
1. Cedar Green Golf Club: A Scenic Favourite in Garson

Location: 100 Carr Ave, Garson, ON
Course Highlights: Situated at the beginning of Garson, Cedar Green is one of the more popular courses in Sudbury for all types of golfers. With a design more tailored for the casual golfer, the course, while short, offers challenges for both the casual and competitive golfer with its wide fairways and small greens. Holes 16-18 may be some of the more challenging finishing holes in the city, with 18 leaving a difficult, but stunning second shot to complete the round. Green fees are average in the city, with various specials and deals. The only thing that this course is lacking is a driving range to complete the experience; however, there is a putting green. As they say: putt for the dough!
Dining: Following your round, there is the option to eat at the clubhouse restaurant, which offers a variety of pub-style food at competitive prices. A unique feature of the course is its Barbecue/Tiki Bar patio, where players can also enjoy a meal and a cold beverage. Around the area are restaurants along Lasalle Boulevard, such as P&M’s Kouzzina, Mr. Prime Rib, Damascus Shawarma, among many other options.
2. Chelmsford Golf Course: The Hidden Gem of ‘Old Chemmy’

This family-run golf course, celebrating its 50th year of business, is great for the casual golfer with wide-open fairways and only a few hazards on the property. Their greens, tiny in size, offer a great challenge hitting on to them. Don’t be surprised when you see a few trees guarding them at times—that's just the unique beauty of this golf course. If you had to describe it in a word, it would be: ‘“fun”! Green fees are among the best bang for your buck in the city, with many package deals offered as well.

Around the area within driving distance would be the Doghouse Azilda, Cousin Vinny’s Restaurant, Topper’s Pizza, among others.
4. Lively Golf Club: A Technical Treasure for Shotmakers

Location: 305-A Sixth Ave, Lively, ON
Course Highlights: Lively is one of the best golf courses in Sudbury, from tee to green, that has a lot to offer. A tight, short, yet challenging golf course more suited for the more competitive golfer, Lively is unique, with some really entertaining holes. Every club in the bag is used at this course, a lefty’s dream with many holes favouring a right-to-left shot shape. When your game is on, some low scores can be posted when taking advantage of their par 5s. While there is a great chipping and putting facility accompanied by a hitting net, it has long been discussed in the Sudbury golf community that the only thing that this course is missing is a driving range.
Dining: Lively has a wonderful dining spot at the course that offers a variety of meals and drinks to enjoy mid and post-round. The food is dynamite, and for Caesar enthusiasts, Lively may have the best one in the city. Cheers!
5. Monte Vista Golf Club: Home of the Golf Marathon and Creative Layouts

Location: 2516 Old Hwy 69 N, Val Caron, ON
Course Highlights: Home of the Golf Marathon Sudbury, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for Sudbury Youth Charities, Monte Vista is a perfect course for the casual golfer. Situated to the right as you enter Val Caron, Monte Vista’s layout has some of the most unique holes in Sudbury, which make for some fun golf. For practice facilities, Monte Vista has a putting green at the front of the property that golfers can prepare for their round with.
Dining: The club has your typical golf course restaurant food (similar to Cedar Green), which is fantastic, with a large area to eat post-round. Like many of the courses, Monte Vista also has a banquet hall that can host many events, with their major draw being weddings. If you are looking for a place outside of the course, make a right down the highway where you will find plenty of sit-down and fast-food options like Overtime Sports Bar & Grill, The Pickled Pig, and Mange!.
6. Pine Grove Golf Club: Budget-Friendly Family Golf with Full Facilities

Location: 3767 Estaire Rd, Sudbury, ON
Course Highlights: A casual golfer’s dream, Pine Grove is situated next to “fun” when you look in the Oxford Dictionary (take my word for it). A great value for your money, Pine Grove offers some of the lowest green fees among the courses in Sudbury. Looking to take the family out for a round of golf? Children ages 10 and under play for free! The course offers a mix of challenge and fun in its layout, with a wide variety of golf holes that will keep you on your toes. A full driving range and putting/chipping facility is offered at Pine Grove to get you ready for your round.
Dining: The course has a full dining area to enjoy a meal after the round. If you’re looking elsewhere, hop back on to the highway back into town for dining options in the Four Corners area, such as Ripe, Buzzy Brown’s, Eddie’s Restaurant, and Di Gusto.
7. Idylwylde Golf & Country Club: Sudbury’s Premier Lakeside Experience

Location: 400 Walford Rd, Sudbury, ON
Course Highlights: Sudbury’s premier golf destination, Idylwylde is beautifully carved in the heart of Sudbury, overlooking Nepawhin Lake. A private-public course, the ‘Idy’, while short, defends itself with its firm, sloped, and quick greens that challenge even the best of golfers. The views you will see on this course are some of the best in Sudbury, especially on the back nine. When you make it to #13 green, give yourself a couple of seconds to look at the spectacular view of Nepawhin Lake and the famous Superstack in the distance. This historic club has been around for over 100 years and is some of the best golf you will find in Sudbury, with many fun but challenging holes. The course also offers a full practice area with a driving range, chipping and putting green, as well as a practice bunker for those that need work in the beach! A must-play if you’re in town.
Dining: The Idylwylde offers a full restaurant in the upstairs portion of the clubhouse with a stunning patio that overlooks the course and lake. The upstairs restaurant is also home to many parties, weddings, events, etc.
8. Stonehill Golf Club: Carved from Rock, Packed with Personality

Location: 566 Silver Lake Rd, Sudbury, ON
Course Highlights: Stonehill couldn’t be a more fitting name for this golf course, as it is carved into the Cambrian Shield and has a ton of elevation changes. A fun layout that gives you every test the game of golf can offer, from water to elevation to blind shots. While tailored more for the casual player, Stonehill can entertain any golfer. Another great value golf course, every hole is a different adventure, providing a unique experience with great views. Make sure your golf ball pouch is full prior to going; it is a tight course that will punish you if you are not accurate off the tee. A putting green lies right before the first tee for you to practice prior to heading out for your round; however, Stonehill does lack a driving range, so you’ll be going in cold!
Dining: Stonehill offers typical snacks you would get at the turn, but does not have a full restaurant to dine in. In a similar area to Pine Grove, you can come back into town for some local dining at places such as Ripe, Buzzy Brown’s, Eddie’s Restaurant, Tony V’s and Di Gusto.
9. Timberwolf: Sudbury’s Signature Championship Course

Location: 1930 Maley Dr, Garson, ON
Course Highlights: Designed by legendary Canadian golf architect Thomas McBroom, Timberwolf is one of the most elite golf destinations in Sudbury, offering just about everything one can ask for in a course. A journey through the unique landscape of Sudbury, including rock, forest, and wetlands, Timberwolf is a vast golf course with challenging, unique, and fun golf holes 1-18. Number 6 offers one of the best views of the course from its elevated tee box—a must-see for golf enthusiasts. All types of golfers can come and play this gem of a course as it can be set up for multiple different lengths. While it does favour the long-ball hitter, ‘Timby’ (as Sudburians call it) has large greens that will test your short game as well. A full practice facility is also offered, including putting, chipping, and a driving range.
Dining: Timberwolf offers a full restaurant with classic golf course dining and a patio that looks over the 18th green, a must on a beautiful sunny day. They also have a full dining hall for events, weddings, etc. Around the area are The Kouzzina, Mr. Prime Rib, and M.I.C.
10. Twin Stacks: Nine Holes of Heritage and Community Pride

Location: 84 Smelter Rd, Coniston, ON
Course Highlights: Another gem of a golf course, Twin Stacks Golf Club was voted the people’s favourite place to play golf in the 2024 Sudbury.com’s readers’ choice awards. The 9-hole golf course was built on an old mine smelter in Coniston over which the twin smoke stacks look. A great learn-to-play course with very getable par 4s and 5s, accompanied by very competitive green fees, makes it a no-brainer for the casual golfer to enjoy. It showcases the regreening efforts made in Sudbury since the peak of the mining industry here. If you were to ask someone in town in the 60s or 70s if a golf course would be built on this site, they would have laughed at you!
Dining: A very underrated restaurant in Sudbury, Twin Stacks offers breakfast, lunch and dinner (only on league nights). All the food is homemade and ranges from porchetta sandwiches, burgers, chicken wings, and other classic pub food. If you finish your round in time, it is a must to get the full Twin Stacks experience!
Stock Up for Your Tee Time at Sudbury Pro Shops
Each of these wonderful golf courses has its respective pro shop, where you can stock up on balls, gloves, tees, ball markers, shirts, shoes, hats, etc. In terms of major equipment, the Idylwylde and Lively can provide club ordering options, while Timberwolf has Sudbury’s major golf shop, Pro Golf Liquidators, directly beside it.
