There’s something soul-healing about watching the sky explode with colour over a calm lake. Head out on a boat, paddleboard, canoe, or even a dock with a coffee or camera in hand. Incredible places like Lake of the Woods, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Pukaskwa National Park, or Lake Temagami, offer spectacular sky shows that remind you how wondrous the world is. A marvellous way to start any day.

2. Take a Hike

Northern Ontario has unrivalled access to incredible hiking trails. Whether it’s a slow, mindful walk at Tunnel Island in Kenora, seeking breathtaking vistas at Cup and Saucer Trail on Manitoulin Island or an epic backpacking trip on Casque Isles, unplugging fully among our incredible wilderness is sure to help you reset and find your happiest self. Engaging in physical activity, especially outdoors, is proven to have huge benefits for mental health and well-being. So, find your closest trail and set out for an adventure that will benefit your body, mind and spirit.

3. Catch (and Release) the Moment

Canoeing - Fishing

Fishing isn’t just about the catch; it’s about presence, patience, and peace. Whether you’re casting a line in Rainy Lake, on Lake Superior shoreline in Wawa’s wilderness, on the famous Nipigon River, or a remote fly-in spot in Wabakimi, time slows down when you’re on the water and wonderful heart-filling memories are created with wet lines and embellished stories about the ‘big one’ that got away.

4. Paddle Into Peace

Rent a canoe or kayak and explore serene waters like Quetico Provincial Park, The French River, Agawa Bay, or Neys Provincial Park. Let the rhythm of paddling and the silence of the wilderness restore your mind.

5. Make a Fire, Make a Memory

There’s no therapy like a campfire. Cook bannock and hot dogs, tell stories, watch the stars emerge, the Northern Lights dance, and let the flames take away your worries. Every good Northern Ontario getaway ends with sparks flying into the night.

6. Sunset at an Epic Lookout

Bring your blanket, delicious snacks and a cold beverage and find an epic lookout like Kama Cliffs, Awausee, or Coney Island Beach. Really, the options are endless in the North, and sunsets here are particularly breathtaking. If you are going for an exciting night hike to a majestic cliff or sitting on the shore of Lake Superior, settling in to watch the sun sink into the earth is the most peaceful and relaxing way to end a day.

7. Fabulous Food and Perfect Picnics

Northern Ontario has some incredible restaurants where you can get unbelievable takeout and treats. Bring some delicious food to incredible places. Get a famous homemade apple fritter from the Voyageur Lodge and Cookhouse and sit on the beach at Batchawana Bay, get amazing sushi and head down to the beautiful waterfront in Kenora, or grab a delicious fried chicken sandwich from Ducky’s Diner and check out the Lookout Tower in Nipigon. Food has a powerful way of bringing us joy. Just imagine the experience with a wondrous view ahead of you. Happiness to the MAX!

8. Connect to Culture

Northern Ontario is rich with Indigenous culture. Connecting to the land, learning the history of our region and engaging in beautiful cultural experiences is a wonderful way to bring joy into your life. Summer is pow wow season in the North. This community celebration is a wonderful way to engage in a soul-shifting experience, be moved by the drum and find delicious treats and incredible artisans. You can also keep your eyes open for workshops all across the North for amazing activities like moccasin making, beading, or traditional cooking.

9. Seasonal Rituals

Fall, winter, spring and summer all have unique elements and opportunities that allow us to engage in activities that breed happiness. Each season offers exciting experiences that you can participate in year after year. Activities that are associated with the cycle of nature and things that we can build into tradition. It can be blueberry picking in the summer, maple tapping in early spring, ice fishing in the depths of February, or pickling locally grown produce in the fall. The entire North has amazing opportunities to establish seasonal rituals that allow us to have predictable, enjoyable experiences that bring peace and anchor us in the change in weather.

10. Make (or find) Beautiful Music

Wake the Giant Music Festival - Thunder Bay

Northern Ontario inspires art of all kinds, especially music. We have amazing festivals like Wake the Giant in Thunder Bay, Red Rock Folk Fest, Shake the Lake in Kenora or Sudbury’s Northern Lights Festival Boreal. Most communities have incredible venues to highlight local talent—maybe it’s at your local legion or a seasonal music series like Sunset Sounds in Terrace Bay or Live at the Waterfront in Thunder Bay. Music is a language that connects all of us, particularly in tune with the deep heartbeat of the North. It creates community and strengthens relationships and allows us to express ourselves, especially when it’s minus 30 and we need to dance to keep from freezing.

Happiness doesn’t need to be hunted down or flown to. It’s right here, in the pulse of the paddle dipping into cold northern waters, in the crackle of a fire under a sky ablaze with stars, in the quiet thrill of standing at the edge of a granite cliff with nothing but forest and freedom in every direction. Northern Ontario isn’t just a place, it’s a feeling, a way of life that invites you to slow down, breathe deeper, and reconnect with what really matters. So, pack your boots, open your heart, and come find your happiness. Northern Ontario is waiting.
