Whitefish Lake: A Father-Son Trip in One of Canada’s Most Unique Fisheries

This shallow, weed-covered 8,000-acre lake in Superior Country is known for big smallmouth bass, walleye, pike, and perch.

Last year I had the opportunity to experience one of the more unique fisheries in Canada, and I got to do it with my 10-year-old son. We travelled to Whitefish Lake in Superior Country, a place I’d heard about for walleyes, pike, perch, and especially big smallmouth bass. The other thing I was told is it was shallow, like almost the whole lake was shallow.

Whitefish Lake, Superior Country: An 8,000-Acre Smallmouth Bass Fishery Hiding in Shallow Water

At roughly 8,000 acres, Whitefish isn’t a small lake. But it fishes unlike just about anything I’ve seen. If you’ve spent time fishing in Canada, you’re used to lakes defined by islands, reefs, rock points, and distinct structure. Whitefish Lake flips the script. The majority of the lake, almost all of it, is less than eight feet deep and covered in healthy weed growth. On paper, that sounds like a dream. In reality, it’s intimidating. You’re staring at thousands of acres that all look the same. It’s essentially one giant weed flat.

But that’s also what makes it so productive.

Finding Hard Bottom: How to Catch Smallmouth Bass on Whitefish Lake

When we arrived, we did what you’re supposed to do: spent time looking around the lake, trying to get a feel for things. But when you’ve got a 10-year-old in the boat in Canada, patience runs thin. He wanted to fish; truth is, so did I. So we pulled up on the first obvious-looking area we could find, and it’s a spot my son will never forget.

The first fish of the trip was a big walleye. Then it turned into a flurry of giant smallmouth. Not just good fish, smallies over five pounds. Right away, we knew we were around something special.

It took a little time to replicate that success. When everything looks the same, the challenge becomes finding the small differences that matter. Using side imaging, we began identifying areas of hard bottom. Those spots didn’t always look like much, but they were everything. Once we keyed in on that, it was almost automatic. If you found hard bottom, you found fish. Big ones. It was, without question, the most impressive average size of smallmouth bass I’ve ever experienced anywhere. Truly world-class.

Best Smallmouth Bass Baits: Rapala PXR Mavrik and X-Rap 10 Jerkbaits

The other thing that stood out was how simple the fishing was. The dominant presentation was jerkbaits, specifically the Rapala PXR Mavrik and X-Rap 10. Smallmouth love jerkbaits, and regardless of the time of year, it seems like if you can get a jerkbait in front of them, especially unpressured ones, they’re gonna eat it. We saw a lot of fish eat the bait, and many of them absolutely crushed it. The visual element of seeing those giant fish eat was really cool!

For both of us, that’s about as fun as it gets. We love fishing jerkbaits, and on this trip, the smallmouth loved them just as much. Paddletails also produced fish, but they didn’t compete with the jerkbait bite.

And that’s one of the best parts about a lake like this: it's simple. You don’t need super complex rigging or finesse presentations like you might in the states. You just need to find the spots and the fish cooperate.

Walleye, Pike, and Perch: Whitefish Lake's Other Fishing Opportunities

Whitefish Lake isn’t just about smallmouth. There are opportunities for walleyes, northern pike, and perch throughout the system. We caught a lot of walleyes on the trip too and a few nice pike. However, it was really hard to target walleyes and pike with such incredible smallmouth fishing available.

Fishing With Kids in Canada: A Trip to Remember at Ole's Adventure Resort

I’ve taken my kids on several trips to Canada, and it’s something we talk about all year. These trips become part of your family story. This one was no different. If you get a chance, take your kids here or anywhere in Canada. Exposing them to the beauty of the landscape, the remoteness of the country, and the incredible fishing will have a lifelong impact on them and be an incredible experience to share with them as a parent.

Dave and Tammy at Ole’s Adventure Resort made the experience even better. It’s a special place with great people, and it sets the tone for the entire trip.

In the end, the fishing lesson from this trip is the same as it is in many great fisheries, just with a different twist. You have to find what’s different. On Whitefish Lake, that difference might be subtle. A change in bottom composition. A small clean area in a sea of weeds.

But once you find it, everything falls into place.

If you’re looking for a unique Canadian fishing experience, one that combines simplicity, incredible fish, and the chance to share it with your family, Whitefish Lake in Superior Country is hard to beat.
